I don't think they give two hoots about anything that benefits the people of Sheffield to be honest. Its all about money these days and I really don't think they'll invest anything like a sufficient amount to build an adequate replacement for the library as it is now. Also the central library is a public building and as such nothing should be decided without proper public consultation. And if its decided that selling is the best option a proper breakdown of what the money made from the selling of the building is spent on should be made public. Also the privatisation of our city centre is a whole other kettle of fish I could rant on about for ages but I'll save that for some other time.

Hats off to you for trying to find the silver lining though x
I totally agree with everything you've said there.

I do understand that the library is a very old building and that renovating it would be expensive and that it would work out a lot more cost effective for the council to sell the building and build a new, purpose-built building with decent facilities. But, as you said, they should be telling us what they're planning for the new library. They haven't done this because they have no plan. Before even agreeing this, they should have at least a plan for what kind of new building they want to build.

I'm not sure which would be the cheapest option - it might turn out to be cheaper in the long term to replace the trees with some concrete structures. But there is more value in having the trees over concrete than just the relative costs of maintaining them.

Presumably you've got long enough hair to affect the Jazzie B look?
I may have but I'm not sure a ginger Jazzie B would be a good look!

It occurs to me that some of you don't do social media so may not know about the hundreds of things (well, five things) I have coming up over the next couple of months. In case you want to know:

3rd December - Owl & Mouse, Model Village, Robberie at the Old Crown, starts 3pm

10th December - Come Out 2night 90s indie disco at West Street "Ale" House. Part of "Ale" House booking dude Jason's 40th birthday celebrations so there's bands and burlesque stuff on first. I'm on between/after the turns

17th December - Pop-o-matic Christmas Special at the Old Crown

14th January - This Must Be The Place which is a new indie night me and Steve are doing at the Old Crown. Not just indiepop but other stuff as well so I can play Anna Meredith and Viet Cong

21st January - Deerful/Cherry Hex and the Dream Church/Ian Turley at the Old Crown again (being friends with a venue manager is great). Haven't announced this anywhere else yet so shhhhhhhh.

That's a bloody great schedule, Dan. Expecting you to get an OBE in the new year's honours for services to pop.

Awwww thanks.

My politics would of course prevent me from accepting an OBE but I'd least get to be able to make a massive scene about it.

Welcome to Sheffield Rebecca. Hopefully we'll see you at something soon. I can't bloody wait for that Deerful gig.

As a city (notwithstanding the sterling work of yer man Pop-o-Matic there) we seem to be at kind of a low ebb musically right now - but these things tend to be cyclical, don't they? Fingers crossed there'll be some new exciting stuff soon.

In other news, I seem to be booked to give a talk to a group of university students about Sheffield music. My central thesis will be that synthpop gave the city a distinctive musical/pop-cultural identity for the first time, that this identity developed through the 1990s and 2000s, reaching its apotheosis in the persona of Jarvis Cocker, and that it pretty much all ended with the Arctic Monkeys. Anything you lot reckon must be included, any sharp points that must be made?

I'm good with that!

Which part of Sheffield are you living in, by the way? A lot of us on here are in Walkley. If there's nothing happening in town we'll often go out locally. You'd be very welcome to join us over this way if you like.

I say 'often'; I mean 'always'.

That sounds great. You've summed up the history of pop music in Sheffield very well there. It's rubbish how the Sheffield DIY music scene seemed to die around the time all the attention on Sheffield via the Arctic Monkeys came.

Oh cool, I definitely will be at the Milky Wimpshake gig. So see yas there. I'm living with my sister and her boyfriend by the river in Wicker. They are hoping to relocate to Walkley this year sometime!

I dunno if anyone has been to /or likes the Sunday Assembly events happening at DINA? but I'm helping out at the next on on Sunday (It's a great group of people and very down to earth)

I think we're going to go to Leila's birthday thing at the Blake. May try and come along later. If I don't make it, I hope it goes well.

Edit: of course that doesn't mean I hope it's rubbish if I do make it!
