Since today is my last day at home for the year, I can post my last.fm hits of the year already:

Top songs of 2012:
01. Colour Me Wednesday - Purge your inner Tory
02. Deep Time - Clouds
03. Withered Hand - Heart heart
04. Orca Team - Vancouver, B.C.
05. Bears - More left out
06. Catnaps - I sat on the edge of my bed and I played you Velvet Underground songs
07. The Tuts - I call you up
08. Vashti Bunyan - Train song
09. Girls Names - Lawrence
10. My Teenage Stride - Creep acadamy
11. Martha - 1848, yawning discreetly
12. Sweater Girls - I'm a little dinosaur
13. The Tuts - Backup
14. Veronica Falls - Bad feeling
15. Bam!Bam! - Hi-fi widows

Top artists of 2012:
01. The Aislers Set
02. Allo Darlin'
03. Orca Team
04. Sea Lions
05. Girls Names
06. Bears
07. Liechtenstein
08. The Tuts
09. Colour Me Wednesday
10. Deep Time
11. Veronica Falls
12. Standard Fare
13. Catnaps
14. Martha
15. Sweater Girls

This means almost nothing, because it doesn't count the songs I play on my MP3-player. Also, I know this will interest nobody, but I just entertained myself for 5 minutes at work, so that counts for something, doesn't it?

Is anyone else having problems listening to radio on last.fm lately? After a few songs it starts going all jumpy and Norman Collier-esque. It happens at home and at work so I guess its not a problem at my end.

I'd forgotten about last.fm for ages, then someone posts the word 'Abba' on my shoutbox thing. Is this code for something? Have I pulled?

I think sometimes when Spotify upgrades it can forget your last.fm username/password so you could try checking this in the 'Settings' screen? Otherwise i'm a bit stumped for a solution. The people on the Spotify forum are quite helpful when it comes to fixing various issues so you could always try them out too if my suggestion doesn't do the trick :)

I don't know if this already exists somewhere on the Internet (probably, since everything does) but I think it would be terrific if they had a way to filter the "Similar Artists" results.

For instance, you pull up the page on Comet Gain. You click the link for Similar Artists. Then you filter by country. And suddenly I've got a list of just Canadian artists similar to them. Then I start Googling and booking shows.

That's doable, with the caveat that none of the top 100 similar artists may turn out to be Canadian.

Here's a proof-of-concept.

Yeah, that is the case but it's still pretty cool. Is it just a simple algorithm to do that for any band then?

The Last.FM API returns MusicBrainz IDs for each artist, so you can just go and ask MusicBrainz for a location for each, one by one.

MusicBrainz recently got a new feature to allow people to specify more-granular locations for artists, so once this data is a bit better populated it should be possible to show artists by city on a map.

Hayley doesn't get much of a look in on our 'end of year most listened to bands' top 25 but that's mostly because she does all her listening on her i-things and has reverted to her previous lastfm username, I think, so perhaps I should change our lastfm username now (?)

Life is so hard... anyway, for those of you still using outmoded internet applications here's the list, which I just 'print screened' and didn't know where to stick so I thought I'd stick it here, give me a sense of purpose, feel like I achieved something, be the first (last?) poster on anorak for 2015...

Mostly from this I think you can see that 'I know what I like and like what I know'...

And this is what I (Rocklobster) was listening to in 2014:

1 Flowers
2 Fear of Men
3 Courtney Barnett
4 Girl One And The Grease Guns
5 Trick Mammoth
6 The Spook School
7 Talulah Gosh
8 The Fireworks
9 Accrington Stanley
10 Young Romance
11 Half Man Half Biscuit
12 Clothilde
12 The Lucksmiths
14 September Girls
15 Sweet Baboo
16 Shopping
16 The Felt Tips
18 The Fall
18 Teleman
18 Darren Hanlon
21 The Pains of Being Pure At Heart
22 Cocteau Twins
23 The Wedding Present
24 The Magnetic Fields
24 Catnaps

The usual mixture of new crushes and old favourites. The Fireworks are surely a shoo-in for number one in 2015, strengthening their squad with a number of astute signings on their new LP after narrowly missing out on a Europa League place this time out.

I wasn't going to bother 'cos it doesn't even tell half the story, but I'm suffering anorak withdrawal, as it seems to be ossifying lately, and I've got a sudden rush of good feeling towards last fm, as I've just discovered all the fancy things you can do with it (Anorak radio is cracking!), apart from helping me to remember where I got to with the record I had to turn off yesterday.

1. Joyride!
2. The Clientele
3. Warpaint
4. Po!
5. Gold-Bears
6. Two White Cranes
7. Tunabunny
8. Good Throb
9. Broadcast
10. The Middle Ones
11. Joanna Gruesome
12. Perfect Pussy
13. Wildhoney
14. Nat Johnson
15. Rocketship
16. Liechtenstein
16. The Soft Close-Ups
18. Frau
19. Cassie Ramone
20. Talulah Gosh
21. Astro Children
22. Thee Ahs
23. Flowers
24. Grouper
24. Trust Fund

It's quite an Anoraky sort of list - Warpaint are the principle NME band exception, although even then their stats are somewhat inflated as I've got both albums on the computer (lots and lots of things aren't). I guess it's just been useful looking on here a lot this year to point me towards stuff that I'd been missing. Joyride! deserve their top spot for the month when I played their record over and over. Wildhoney are notable as I've only got six songs by them, which I proceeded to play a lot on various devices, including this one, looking forward to their album immensely.
crystal ball wrote: When I'm feeling blue all I have to do is look at the Heavenly page on last.fm: there are people there fighting about whether metal Heavenly are better than indiepop Heavenly. I bloody love last.fm.
This remains as vituperous and savage as ever. It's the pettiness of these two-band pages that really marks them out. A similar situation is happening on the Po! page. After months of painstaking progress, a picture of Ruth Miller and co. was finally posted at the top, only to be replaced within a day by another picture of the little Japanese video-game music artist, who had immediately been voted for about fifty times, just to spite the indiepop fans (although to be fair, I only wanted Ruth at the top just to spite them). Now the effort must begin all over again. We are too few…

The best solution is probably found on the Springfields page, with this…

…though it does look a bit like Ric and co. are the wallflowers at a party, shunned and sidelined to the stairs whilst Dusty and her bandmates cut some rug. I feel more sorry for them than if they'd been forced off altogether.

All this talk of last fm as made me want to start using it again - my last scrobble was 2012!

Unfortunately the Android music playing app I use won't scrobble. All music player apps are rubbish but this is the least rubbish one. I've switched to a different one but I'll have to see how long I can stand it.

Has anybody invented a way of scrobbling vinyl yet?

Oh cool! Thanks.

I have my hi-fi hooked up to a raspberry pi so if I can get it running on that then that would work a treat.

307 plays alone for The Manics came last month due to their Holy Bible shows.. Other than that, good year for The Chills - the 2 shows i saw in the Summer were highlights of the year.. Night Flowers are surprisingly high (no bad thing).. Still havent clicked with the latest Comet Gain album, but it will happen and the new POBPAH album was (for me) a real return to form.

Honourable mentions to The Blue Minkies, great to see them again in 2014 and have Murray lovingly compile their back catalogue and The Delmona's reissues were both amazing and vital.

All in all, 2014.. a good year.. no absolute stand out album of the year for me, but a lot of decent strong efforts.

Manic Street Preachers 372
The Chills 190
Comet Gain 140
Night Flowers 135
The Pains of Being Pure At Heart 115
Suede 109
Tunabunny 103
Bis 95
The Wendy Darlings 92
Pulp 88
Sonic Youth 81
The Delmonas 79
September Girls 77
Dexys Midnight Runners 76
Talulah Gosh 72
The McTells 64
The Blue Minkies 61
Chain and the Gang 59
Mogwai 58
Jonathan Richman 57
Dean Wareham 57
The Delgados 56
Ride 56
Sugar 55
The Cure 54
and that snare drum, that drum roll
means we've got a winner
