Though obviously if he starts messing with the convention of studio pundits doing the last session of the world championship final in full evening dress there'll be green baize hell to pay.

How about some Battle Royale type thing, where every frame lost results in a finger getting chopped off? 'Live' snooker balls which explode randomly taking the face off one of them. Y'know, jazz it up a bit, like.
Fuck your tea room.

sweepingthenation wrote:Partly perception - less "characters" (because god knows Neal Foulds and Willie Thorne were lives and souls of any party), less viewers (even though it got more than the cup final one year in the 00s), all that - and partly the aftereffects of the cigarette advertising ban and the down slope from snooker's 80s popularity. It's factual to say there's currently fewer top ranking events than ever, which is a big part of what Hearn's plans revolve around. Basically he wants to make it a big television spectacle again, which I'm not sure is going to work without compromise. Even so, it's not a sport with the worldwide foundations and current press image that would easily survive its leading player being banned for years and years.
I suspect the down-turn is also due to things like the advent of ceefax and the Internet - meaning you no longer have to watch it on tele and learn the result.

More than once during the World Champs the tele coverage didnt start til long after the match had started (or only showed one of 2 tables) so i simply looked for the score elsewhere and didnt watch the tele. Given the time a game takes unless you can devote huge amounts of live screen time to it, you are unlikely to hook an impatient generation.

I guess that's why Hearn is looking at shorter matches, and a mystery exploding ball and a rottweiler in one pocket...

There were claims just after the story broke that the frames Higgins had vowed to throw were in exhibition matches.

Look out for Sheffield Anoraks in the final session of O'Sullivan/Higgins this evening! Perhaps I'll wear something easy to pick out...

I've plumped for ridiculously-bright orange. That way I can't be mistaken for one of the balls (it's not Snooker Plus).

Are you near Jarvis? I saw him on the tellybox just then.

Cara texted me during the mid-session interval - apparently they're at the back, but just a few rows behind Jarv.

I can confirm this. Two ace matches, Jarvis (and apparently someone from a band called 'Kasabian').

You definitely need to watch The Rack Pack on the red button thing or iPlayer or whatever. It's ace.

Yeah I love that Pete. They were cast really well weren't they? Jimmy White was really close to the mark.
