iPods
I searched for an iPod thread but couldn't find one. So, er, here is one.
I think my iPod just crashed on me. I have a 160 gb iPod Classic. It was not even close to capacity, maybe 30 gb at the very most taken up. It has frozen up now and again (rarely though) but always managed to reboot.
This time it didn't work, and it said "Restore through iTunes". Well, that's what I attempted to do. It told me there was an error (1434) which they do not offer any advice about on the Apple website. A quick google suggests it is hardware-based and probably means your HD is fucked.
I do not believe I am under any warranty. This pretty much means I'll have to fork out for a repair or buy a new one, right?
Argh. iPod, you are breaking my heart here!
Any help or advice greatly appreciated!

Re: iPods
PHEW and a half!
It turns out, I was a clever lady and bought the proper Apple Care cover for my iPod (I just assumed I hadn't) apparently, as I found out through the confirming e-mail on my gmail (which Jonny suggested). I know they might try to fool me anyway, but at least I have the warranty and I can hopefully make them replace it with the 120 gb. Or to be honest, the 80 gb would do just as fine. I rarely even go above 30.

Re: iPods
I think this thread is where people generally post their iPoddy problems. But perhaps posh people who own iPods don't want to post about their precious gadget in a thread about other mp3 players?let it ride wrote:I searched for an iPod thread but couldn't find one. So, er, here is one.

The Ipod is not just an mp3 player, Martijn. It's a lifestyle statement.Martijn wrote:I think this thread is where people generally post their iPoddy problems. But perhaps posh people who own iPods don't want to post about their precious gadget in a thread about other mp3 players?

Re: iPods
I thought the other thread was specifically to give advice about all mp3 players that are NOT iPods, for people who hate iPods and people who own iPods. So I thought I'd stay away.

Did you try holding down menu and select (or was it pause and select)?let it ride wrote:I searched for an iPod thread but couldn't find one. So, er, here is one.

Re: iPods
Yup, I did all of that stuff!
As it turned out I was still under warranty, I called them yesterday and apparently my error (1434) is super rare, even they were baffled as to what it was. But they offered to just replace it, so I've had a UPS guy come give me the special packaging and take the iPod away again today. They've been so quick! And I'll get a new one within 7 days. Although I suppose I'll get the 120 gb one now, as they don't make the 160 gb anymore.

Re: iPods
No, it'll be replaced with a refurb, or conceivably old stock kept specially.
i.e. you'll get the same model back as you sent in, unless I'm very much mistaken.

The real pain was the 2 days it took to sync 15000 songs back across from ITunes !

2 days! bloody hell. you must have been using usb 1, surely…mkgleeds wrote: Yep that's what i got in the same circumstances.

my quick calculation seems to indicate that transferring 100GiB over usb 1 takes nearly 20 hours, and given the massive overheads of usb i doubt usb 1 actually gets 12Mb/s so in really it's going to be considerable longer than that.

I do regularly get a message that says something like "This device could work faster..." but never really bothered investigating what its telling me to do.frogblast wrote:2 days! bloody hell. you must have been using usb 1, surely…mkgleeds wrote: Yep that's what i got in the same circumstances.

I think i have 2 USB points, 1 is permanently connected to the little broadband box and the IPod / Camera / Printer get swapped around in the other. Should i try swapping them over ?

Re: iPods
Argh, mine started doing this with my PC/iTunes at home, and then it wouldn't recognise the device on my work computer's USB either (that computer doesn't have iTunes), and I'm convinced it's responsible for messing up my home PC to the extent that it kept freezing and had to be repaired, so perhaps a cautionary tale there. It will now charge if it's plugged into a socket charger, but it seems to drain the battery in almost real time - i.e. I basically have about 15 hours of battery life regardless of whether it's switched on or not, which is of course massively annoying if you're going away and don't have time to charge it. I think all of this probably means it's pretty fucked and that I should buy a new one (no amount of rebooting it has made any difference) but I've been really busy and probably can't really afford it until next month, although this has actually been going on for about four or five months I think. I'm preparing myself for the worst (forking out for a brad new one), but if anyone else's has done this and come back from the brink, I'd be interested to hear how much it cost to get fixed.80sfan wrote:so my i-pod will connect perfctly well to the computer, but the mrs' won't. it charges when plugged in so the connection's fine, but the computer doesn't see there's a removale device plugged in, nor does itunes... so no syncing possible.

Re: iPods
How old is your iPod? Perhaps it needs a new battery?
I still recommend the apple support forums (and calling apple support...).

Re: iPods
When my iPod broke within warranty, I had it replaced, but they wouldn't extend the warranty on the replacement. I was pretty incensed about that, because it meant that if the replacement broke within the same timeframe as the original, it wouldn't be replaced by Apple.
I was about to buy an iBook at the time, and opted for a Vaio instead thanks to Apple being so atrocious. I hope things have moved on, because I have an iPhone now and I really don't want it to break.

Re: iPods
Who would extend a warranty on a replacement? The warranty on anything only ever lasts from the initial date of purchase. Otherwise you'd be in iPods for life... Not that I'm a massive apple fanboy or anything (but I do think Sony are rubs).
