I am listening to Petula Clark. I love this stuff because it's so relentlessly positive and happy... not mindlessly so, in a way that implies there isn't anything bad, but defiantly so, in a way that says "yes, there is this bad thing and that bad thing, but look, there's this as well, and it's brilliant". That's my favourite kind of songwriting that is. Also: ace voice.

I love Our Pet. Don't Sleep In The Subway is my favourite, because it's like three different songs in one and I adore the arrangement. I used to do Downtown a lot on the ol' karaoke, of course.

Some new songs by All Girl Summer Sun Band on theirspace. They are a bit loud and a bit noisy, but I might get used to that.

Loads of things!

My new stereo has got a USB socket so I've plugged my external hard drive into it, which has got chuffing hundreds of albums on, and put it on random. I don't normally do random but this is quite nice. One song in three, I don't even recognise.

Right now, then, it's playing 'Take Them Out' by the rather underrated South Ambulance. A couple of songs back I had the Bis cover of 'Love Will Tear Us Apart', which is always good for a laugh.

Elliott Smith's From A Basement On The Hill. Like all his stuff post-Either/Or, some of it's lovely and some of it's more bombastic, or worse, forgettable. But it still has some great moments.

Microphones - The Moon

There's something a little bit...unsettling about it in a way. But I love it all the same.

Also, the songwriting and production on those mid-sixties female-vocal pop records is astounding. I think it's a terrible shame that France Gall gets all the cred while Petula Clark and Cilla Black are laughed at. I have a Cilla album from 1966 and it's amazing. In fact, I think I'll go and listen to it now.

Unfairly or not, with Cilla Black I suppose this is for a big part because to most people (at least outside the UK) she's best known for making not the ultimate versions of songs also recorded by others: You've lost that loving feeling (The Righteous Brothers), Anyone who had a heart (Dionne Warwick), Yesterday (The Beatles), et cetera. I suspect it's a bit harder to win artistic credit as an interpreter of well known contemporary pop songs, especially when you're a white woman in the sixties.

I'm not listening to any of that now though, but:

Catwalk - Past afar

is also a mighty fine song.

I think with Cilla the problem has more to do with cancelling out any artistic credit with the incredible artistic debits that result from being responsible for some of worst television shows ever broadcast throughout the 70s and 80s. I honestly think it wouldn't matter a whole lot what she did in the sixties if you can't in your mind's eye seperate her from the Cilla Black Show and Blind Date ... and no matter how hard I try, I can't. I wouldn't have said anyone under rates Petula Clark though. That said I'd take Dusty over any of them I must admit.

well of course much of the credit rightfully belongs with their songwriters and producers, but this is still true today even for Kylie and Madonna. No, Cilla doesn't have the most perfect voice, but you don't need a perfect voice to make great records, cf. Lou Reed and David Bowie.

also, it helps a tad if Paul McCartney writes songs just for you to sing.

The Carousel "ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ"

Not a patch on "I Forgot To Remember To Forget", but, it finally clicked for me tonight...I've always thought of the 'alphabet' album as a bit weak...didn't hit the spot as their previous one did...The first is still the best, but, for the first time, I'm really enjoying this...

Still not sure about the evangelical-god-talks-to-me of @Baby Sweetness"...I love how it sounds, but, can't get to grips with the subject matter....that aside...I love this album now, just slightly less than the first one...
Love is a weakness in the knees...it's dangerous on the stairs...

Labrador's just sent through their newsletter with a free mp3 from the new Legends single, called 'Seconds Away', so that's what I'm listening to. The Pains of Being Pure at Heart should sue.

Do you like it?

I think it's sounding ok, I've got higher hopes for the new album than I did for the last two.
