i'm listening to saturdays and the turning tide by bright ideas which came out as a cd-r in 2005 but is now a 12".
slumberland wrote:this crucial reissue is nothing short of a lost classic of us crash-pop. helmed by english singles/ski instructors main man scott miller, this is in that great lineage of tvps/mctells, but just overflowing with heart, energy and those great tunes that scott is well-known for. eight great tunes, and cut at 45 rpm for maximum oomph.
really liked the cd-r but i must say the lp gives the songs a whole new lease of life, sounds so much better & there's plenty of subtle touches i hadn't really noticed before (i had a tendency to just listen to "casanova's memoirs" on repeat, a re-recorded version of my favourite song from their previous album ... and don't the kids just like it). also a lyric sheet this time. read somewhere that the idea was to write a record about summer in sacramento & with the current unseasonally fine weather this record is totally hitting the spot.
bright ideas wrote:"back in your life" is a staple in my ears again / oh i can't take it / it's like, something that can sound so pure / and like a long-lost friend, you just can't fake it
it's a free download from the squirmy records bandcamp (and available direct or from slumberland who are going to do an english singles 7" soon). so good!
The first song on that bandcamp thingy is so familiar. Where have I heard ity before? I have no idea why I'm asking you this. You're not Yuri Geller.

Absolutely bloody brilliant, joyous even. Thanks Dan. I love his voice, it reminds me of someone, and I can't quite put my finger on who.

Everybody should grab this, it's FREE and it's awesome!

sam: i reckon their music is just instantly catchy/familiar pop. or, to quote the next song, "plagiarise shit contantly". scott m is on anorak, maybe he'll drop in to say who he ripped off for "dreamin'" ;-)

glad people are into it! i agree his voice is ace: think he only drummed in the bananas & nar, i like the bands where he sings more. (edit: he did sing in nar)

His voice is *dreamy*. Been listening to them an awful lot today. Mike Slumberland Tweeted yesterday that he's in a new band called English Singles and he's putting out a seven-inch by them soon.

that Saturdays and the Turning Tide record is spot on, listened to it three times in a row already and i never do that anymore. On the influences, my Beulah-dar is going off. Anyone else?

Cor, that is really good. I can't wait for it to get warmer so that I can listen to it in the environment that it deserves. There is a definite Elephant 6 vibe to it. It also reminds me of a less kooky Lilys.

Oh, hey, this just made my day! I got an email from Vince who does Squirmy saying "someone just ordered the Bright Ideas LP & both singles" and I thought "did it get posted on Anorak??". Thanks Daniel for putting it up here because it didn't feel right putting it up here myself! Anyway, I'm VERY happy that people are enjoying the record because I'm proud of it & it came out in an edition of 100 CDRs that barely made it out of Sacramento so it hasn't exactly gotten around. And anyone who knows anything knows that you're not a proper pop band until people in the UK know about you!

I love hearing what other people hear in this. I get Elephant 6 a lot which is fine with me, though I cant say it's an conscious influence. Beulah I've never really listened to but it's funny that Tim the Bright Ideas drummer always tried to get me in to them since they were one of his favorite bands (does anyone else ever do the stupid thing where they don't listen to something just because someone tells them they think they'd like it?). The influence for Dreamin' (as Daniel mentioned since I told him about it in an email) was Hefner as I was in the throes of a Hefner phase at the time & thought I was ripping them off - which seems funny to me now since it sounds nothing like them. But I guess in general when I say I was influenced by something it tends to mean I was inspired more than anything. God, remember hearing Hefner for the first time? What a fucking band.

Oh yeah, and if a few songs sound familiar it might be because you heard them on a Popgun cassingle long ago? We did a few of those.

Anyway, thanks again for the kind words! It's always amazing to see something you've done slowly move its way around the world.

I corrected you there, I think. Although they do have at least 1 video with Jen in it as well.

You are, of course, 100% correct.

Weird thing is, I even meant Harriet but wrote Jen instead. It's been a long weekend.

Listening to the criminally still unreleased 'Scarlet' by Motorcycle Boy a lot lately. Surely the time is ripe for this to finally get a deluxe style issue along with all the singles?

It's tickling my Go-Go's joy gland anyway. Could never get bored of Alex Taylor's vocals.
