the rough trade bonus cd-r that comes with the girls names album: songs from a couple of radio/ internet sessions. i might prefer it to the album. the guitar sound on the bbc version of "i lose" is ridiculous(ly cool)

Spent last night;

(1) seeing if I could remember enough songs I first discovered courtesy of Annie Nightingale's Request Show years and years and years ago,

(2) seeing whether there were enough of them out there in cyberspaceland to fill a CDR with.

I really shouldn't be allowed near MP3 sharing sites. Badness happens.

Succeeded, anyway. Found some Sensational Alex Harvey Band, Gangway, Erste Allgemeine Verunsicherung, Terry Blair And Anouchka, Digital Undergound, Nico, Todd Rundgren, and plenty more besides.

...oh yeah, and Fish Heads, of course;

I can't go back, you must go back
I can't go forward, you must go forward

watching the 'upside down' creation records documentary has got me listening to lots of my bloody valentine and 'munki' by the jesus and marychain and 'she's out of touch' by slaughter joe

the new comet gain lp has got me listening to television, the go betweens and prefab sprout

'lions in my own garden (exit someone)', 'appetite' and rather a lot of 'swoon' ('technique', 'cruel', 'I never play basketball now', etc) are ace songs... for a long time prefab sprout made me do a little sick in my mouth but distance x time = fresh ears

'appetite' is such a gorgeous song, whatever the bloody hell he's singing about and despite the very 80's production, it's still fucking gorgeous

here's the sprouts miming the song at the primavera festival in 1986 (I've no idea what's going on at the end of the clip):

listening to prefab sprout make me want to listen to microdisney and 'high land, hard rain' (these connections may only occur in my head, admittedly)

'dolly' by microdisney

'the boy wonders' by aztec camera, from a show in madrid in 1984 (groovy duds!)

'down the dip' from the same show

and as for television, I'm not sure why the new comet gain lp has made me listen again to 'marquee moon', a record I've sort of wandered around and kept at arm's reach never really loving it but now I get it... I need to listen to a lot more neon boys stuff too, the early tom verlaine and richard hell recordings

I suppose, by rights, listening to the new comet gain lp should send me scurrying off to listen to the blue orchids but... I'll get there in time

I've been listening to the new A Hawk and A Hacksaw album so much that last night I dreamt that I was a member of the band playing this song:

Then I woke up and had to go to my crap job where I don't get to play any awesome music at all.

The Persuaders - Grange Hill

Nice jazzy version of the Grange Hill theme. Reminds of the Seat Belts from Cowboy Bebop.

Tinseltown in the Rain by The Blue Nile, ever since it was played between bands at the Allo Darlin' gig last Friday. I had TOTALLY forgotten that this song exists, and how brilliant it is.
