Another new 6music show that simply isn't alternative enough

Don't know if anyone else out there agrees but it was a bit disappointing to see Andrew Collins and Josie Long replaced by Edith Bowman (eventually) It feels like another career presenter that is not really clued up about good music. This morning she had a feature called my favourite band i've never heard of. And she played a song called Loaded Up by the Lazy Maybees. 4 minutes of completely wasted air time that could have been useful to a band that listeners might actually like. The song can be heard here. https://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Lazy ... 2405167945

I don't want to be mean about MOR stuff. I just thing it should be played elsewhere......and Edith Bowman should be presenting elsewhere.

I have no idea what any of this means.

(Especially given the placing of the link and the pretend annoyance that someone on the radio has never heard of a band who've never even been mentioned on Anorak before, I have every idea what this means. Also, Josie Long left that slot at the end of 2011)

Ha fair enough....I am just rambling on about a possible deterioration in 6music and was just giving an example. This Saturday morning slot has seen quite a bit of change over the last 2 years and it looks they have finally settled on a poor choice. I can't see as many opportunities for decent unknown bands getting played. Andrew Collins and Josie Long played quite a bit of decent stuff from micro-labels and unknowns.

Not a fan of Bowman (though she played an awesome powerpop song that was new to me and Genius Of Love by Tom Tom Club yesterday) but I think 6Music still do pretty well for playing genuinely alternative music. I mean, they played The Sweet Nothings ffs. Twice.

You still have Lammo, Mark Riley, Gideon Coe, the Jarv, Cerys Matthews, Tom Ravenscroft and Stuart Marconie's Freak Zone, all of which play great music and sometimes play pretty out there stuff.

I think Bowman is on to deliberately play the more mainstream stuff. I did like it when Josie Long and Andrew Collins had that slot, and when Adam and Joe had it, and I'm sure they'll be back. And least she's not Richard Bacon.

(Don't want to sound like I'm having a go btw. Sorry if it comes across like that).

I religiously record and playback Radcliffe & Maconie every day. Think it's superb for amusing banter & decent tunes. Sure, it's not hugely niche and the odd bit if commercial shite ends up on their playlists but overall I think it's an ace station.

Haven't heard Bowman's show but in this age where you can play back any show you like you can choose not to listen to her, right?

I don't know why anyone would listen to music radio in this day and age with Spotify, iPods and so on.

I do.

Sometimes it nice to have someone else filter your music listening so you hear things outside of your own tastes/comfort zone.

I listen if it has Adam Buxton in it.

I do too. It can be nice not to know exactly what you're going to be listening to. They can also fill you in with more information on what they've been playing and lead you in the direction of other stuff. Sometimes I just like a wee bit of chat and the feeling that someone is broadcasting to you to be honest.

The Saturday morning slot on 6music has never seemed to be one where they've really concentrated on the music, so I don't think Edith is a disappointment in that way anyway. Josie used to play a couple of Scottish indie tracks a week that otherwise wouldn't have been there but that was about that. I don't think anyone's ever going to be entirely satisfied with 6music, but they have a tough remit and I think they're just about doing enough to get different music out there.

I don't really get that. When you have so much music at your fingertips with these new fangled mediums, listening to music radio in case something you might be into comes on seems totally cumbersome to me.

I listen to Gideon Coe's show - he likes indiepop!

Hmmm. The reason I used to listen to John Peel was so that I could hear stuff I like (or might like) alongside stuff that would challenge me to listen to things that I'd not hear through choice.... the same applies now - if you only listen to stuff you think might like you will miss out on good/interesting stuff.

They don't have Junior Good Day/Bad Day on Spotify.

Spotify doesn't have Mary Anne Hobbes' voice either. But it does feel like 6Music is going through one of those phases when you wonder if you've put Radio 1 on by mistake.

That said, I don't think I'll go to all the trouble of downloading and listening to a song I'm not going to like, as the original poster is inviting us to do.

Nah, balls to that, John Peel really pushed himself to find new stuff and would play stuff that was genuinely challenging, whenever I've attempted to listen to 6 music it's like being stuck in a car with an old schoolfriend you've run into by accident who's offered you a lift home and who thinks you'll be impressed because he's playing some Brit Pop followed by some All Seeing I (the one hit) followed by some Richard Hawley followed by some Fun Lovin' Criminals

'You love all this, don't you?', he says sinisterly, 'you love the alternative music'

'Have you got anything more recent?', you ask, your voice breaking

'Later', he whispers as you realise the lock on the passenger door won't release and your stuck in the countryside far far from anyone, 'I've got some Jake Bugg'

'But for now...', he smiles menacingly, 'well, you can't beat a bit of Wonderstuff, can you?'

I know what you mean about Edith Bowman; compared to, say, Cerys Matthews' show on Sunday morning, the things she plays are spectacularly bland. However, there are still plenty of other interesting things on there (Cerys and the aforementioned Jarvis Cocker and Tom Ravenscroft shows, for a start), so I don't really begrudge them having the odd show that's a bit more mainstream. I've only been getting back into listening to the radio in the last few months (due to getting a radio in the kitchen), and have got into at least 10 new bands (or new to me, at least) in that time, some of which are quite different to many other things I listen to, which in my eyes is argument enough as to why someone would want to listen to the radio.

I find it highly amusing that 6Music - hey, we're 6Music, alternative radio, yeah! None of that mainstream stuff you get on Radio1 and HeartFM, yeah? - asked the public what the greatest song in the station's 10-year history was. And the public said "hmm, I think we're going to go for Clocks, by Coldplay". Brilliant.

That was a little depressing. Do any big poll though and something fairly safe and full will almost always come out on top.

I too do most of my radio listening in the kitchen. Easy just to turn it on while you're doing some cooking and keep you company. If you hear something new and great then all the better!

I don't like the way they 'sold' Edith Bowman to us by pretending it was going to be Adam Buxton and her and then quietly letting Adam leave again...

They play fairly mainstream stuff in the daytime and there are some really excellent, diverse, interesting shows at other times. That's fairly standard, isn't it? If they played wildly obscure stuff all the time then nobody would listen and they'd shut it down.

I think it's great that it exists, and for anyone in a band, I'd recommend submitting tracks to Tom Robinson's "fresh on the net" thing. He's played both of the songs I've submitted, one of them twice. And I still think it's pretty fucking exciting to have a song played on the radio!
