I promise I'll stop being obsessed with these Anorak charts any day now, but I like our this week's:

1=
Belle and Sebastian
The Pains of Being Pure at Heart
2=
Horowitz
Comet Gain
The Magnetic Fields
Camera Obscura
3=
Joy Division
The Beatles
The Deirdres
The Pastels
The Field Mice

I just like seeing The Pains of Being Pure At Heart near the top of any list, really.

Can I ask a question that I'm slightly ashamed to ask? Because, underneath it all, I'm rubbish at Last.fm and don't know how it works other than that it plays me pretty tunes.

Anyway... if I want to listen to lots of music by one band over and over again rather than listening to their similar artists, do I need to have a subscription?

No, Last.fm doesn't work like that. You can't specifically choose what you listen to, what tracks or what artists, you can only listen to related artists for any given artist, genre, group or other listener.

Ummm... but I get given lists of what other people I know have been listening to and when, and they have all listened to one artist over and over again, variety of songs but same artist... so do they have different privileges in some way or is it something I've missed? I thought you just got a related radio station and it worked like that as you say, but now I'm jealous of strangers and their ability to pick and choose.

Those lists are most probably just what people have been playing on their computer. If you download the LastFM plugin and install it in Winamp, Mediaplayer or what, it keeps track of all the tracks you play. So if you play 10 mp3s of Bunnygrunt in a row, it'll display those in your last played tracks.

If you knew that I feel silly for explaining.

The other thing is that, if someone else has subscribed you can listen to their tag radio. So, you click on one of their tags you can hear everything they've tagged as that. I'm not sure if that works if they haven't subscribed. I think you can still listen to someone else's tag radio, but not your own if you haven't subscribed.

Sorry, I'm tired so I might be talking gibberish. Does that make any sense at all??

The point of all that is that, for example, if they've tagged one band under one heading, you could listen to that.
Or, you could just msg them and ask them to send you the file...

I'm Elvistears. Come and say hello..

I only tag songs I (really) like as "perfect" and "fucking perfect". It's quite good fun deciding which one to use.

I was just looking up the band 'Pussy' on last fm, and found the 'porn' listener group.

http://www.last.fm/group/Porn

I love the artist connections:

pussy
anal cunt
the rocking dildos
anal blasphemy
sweaty nipples etc

And then... Goldfrapp.

This group looks good... anyone pushing Lucky Soul is okay by me, even if Simon Cowell is quite an obvious target!

What have they done to the taste-o-meter ?? It's listing EVERY artist i have in common with some people. It seems to be completely random who.

It's really very annoying
and that snare drum, that drum roll
means we've got a winner

You think that's annoying? My artist page is showing a load of videos for that tedious hippie from Fleetwood Mac.

Check out this lass on last.fm. She registered on 6 November and she's played 39,748 tracks! Is that even possible?

i'd be more concerned about the fact she's 23 and still listening to hanson. maybe she's conducting some kind of shuffle randomocity algorithm investigation and so leaves her tunes playing all the time.
When the people are being beaten with a stick, they are not much happier if it is called 'the People's Stick.'

Let's stay on the short side and say an average track is 3 minutes long.

39748 x 3 minutes = about 120000 minutes = 2000 hours = over 80 days.
6 November + 80 days = later than today.

I can't believe I just did that.

Can you now import old listening stats from an old profile when making a new one? If not, there's some jiggery-pokery afoot. And it smells bad.
not really here
