The best thing about Last fm is being able to create automatic Spotify playlists (country dependent, but works in the UK). Click on the Play button to the left of any song in any list and any tunes available on Spotify in whatever list you've clicked on (user's recent songs, user's all-time song list, artist song page, etc) will appear as a Spotify playlist. I'm not sure they publicised this at all - I discovered it by accident by clicking on a Play button, and it was like, Whoa! So...if you so wished, you can create an automatic playlist of anybody's top 50 songs of the last 12 months, for example. I'm on a PC, using Firefox - not sure if it'll work on every other platform.

The new last.fm profile design is awful.

You just ruined my day : )
Actually, the top albums thing is quite good, but the look is fucking horrific.

I hate that instead of having a top 8 artists with pictures and also a list of top artists with just text, there is only a top 5 with pictures.

I particularly dislike how they've gotten rid of the pictures that go with the songs, where in the past you'd see an album cover or a band pic, now there's nothing. You haven't got any of the choices that you used to have over composition of the page at all either.

Why do they do these things? I had a look on Twitter and no-one has a good word to say about it.

It's rather rubbish. I used to able to see everything that was most useful on one page. Not any more. I quite like the graphs but none of it really works on my main browser so I won't be on there much anymore.

Any info about people you actually know or share musical tastes with have disappeared too.

No neighbours, no 'what your friends are listening to right now', no 'top listeners amongst your friends' on the artist pages. It's all geared up towards global trends, which is obviously bullsh*t.

Where are people scrobbling from now a days? Ever since I swapped spotify for Apple Music, nothing gets scrobbled. I barely ever play music on my computer, and I don't know if there's any modern app that takes plays from an iPhone/etc.

I had an app on my iPhone called CloudScrob that picked up plays from other apps and sent them to Last.FM. I assume they will have updated it to cope with Apple Music, but I can't confirm, as I abandoned Apple forever when they forced Bono on me.

I think they've nipped one of my "friends" off as well. I don't go out of my way to make them on last fm, but I'm a bit miffed that one of the three has disappeared.

I still use Winamp to listen to mp3's on my computer. Also anything I listen to on 8tracks is recorded.

I can still see you as a follower and following so I guess it's not me... Could it be because they've now split it into two categories and it was someone you are following but they're not following you back or vice-versa?

For scrobbling from my phone (Android) I use Simple Last.fm Scrobbler which will work with most music playing apps. Plus I have a raspberry pi connected to my hifi running mpdroid (which I can control from my phone or laptop) which has a scrobbling plugin.

I've been considering switching to libre.fm for a while now which is basically an open source copy of last.fm that conforms to the same api so most apps should work with it. It doesn't share your data with the record labels and also if you want to you can self host it so then all your data is totally under your own control. It doesn't do the recommendation thing based on what you've listened to though but I haven't looked at that in years. Maybe this redesign is the kick I need to actually start using it instead. I think I did set an account up on their hosted version of it years ago and imported my last.fm history but never went any further.

No, I looked at both of those. I don't really understand how you can have two categories of that anyway, I suppose it depends how they do it. But you've remained solid, tonieee, you're a rock. Surely last fm friends are the most profound and long lasting relationships we ever form.

I can never bring myself to friend people on last fm. I just feel so needy - "will you be my friend?" *blinks rapidly*

Judging by the state of the iOS offerings, last.fm must be revamping to avoid totally dying a death.

The redesign threw me for a second. It looks nice. But they've stripped so many things away that are still under development it's crazy. Unless they had to move over for some technical reason...

The new version is pretty rubbish. It doesn't look very functional, doesn't seem to to scrobble from Spotify or Universal Scrobbler, and I can't find the events list.

There is an upside, though.

The new face of hip-hop?

Have the groups gone for good? there doesn't seem to be any mention of them in the stuff they're still putting up.
