Unlikely background music on TV

Post by humblebee » Sat Oct 06, 2007 12:50

Football Focus is currently showing the goals from last week's Murdoch Cheating Bastard League, and the background music is 'No Love Lost' by Joy Division.

It's very strange!

'Friend of the Night' by Mogwai on the X Factor!

Er, it was just on in the background while I was in the room.

There was just a clip from Steve Reich's 'Music for 18 Musicians' on Coast.

one day, i was at home, minding my own business, idly watching a made-for-schools documentary about schizophrenia, when yo la tengo' came on the soundtrack (green arrow i think it was) and i nearly passed out from shock and confusion. so shocked was i, that i still recall this instance of unlikely background music on TV some three years later.

Hearing the music of and mentioning by name of Belle And Sebastian on How I Met Your Mother was weird. Especially since it was Bob Saget doing the talking.

Just now I had to make sure I wasn't dreaming when they used the intro to 'Sunday Morning' by the Velvet Underground on a Look North feature about mushroom picking in Huddersfield.

And then five minutes later a piece about Blue Peter on The One Show was soundtracked by 'The Boy With The Arab Strap'.

I turned on the radio on a Sunday morning a few weeks ago and Michael Ball was playing a section of it on loop and using it as bed music. It was disturbing.
I'm back on trail making duty tomorrow, so I'll endeavour to supply more unlikely background music for tv.

The Boy Least Likely To and Jim Noir soundtracking adverts. What is that about?

Not sure where to post this...4 Music are currently showing a top 50 indie songs thingy. Ugh...it's grim. I'm not sure why I've even got it on...Kaiserchiefs?, Razorlight?, Jet???

What the fuck have Jet got to do with indie???

At least there's been a Blur track...

There was (is?) this Dutch radio talkshow (yes, I know that makes it slightly off-topic) on Saturday mornings that was really popular, not least because they never really went deep into things, that played Spearmint's Scottish Pop at least twice. I wonder if any Dutch radio show dedicated to music has ever played that song. When I first heard it I could barely believe my ears. They played songs like Belle and Sebastian too and I think it was there that I discovered the Beautiful South's Rotterdam (or Anywhere).

It's not really unlikely, but I was heartened to hear British Sea Power's 'The Great Skua' over the last couple of minutes of Alan Yentob's documentary about the guitar on BBC1 last night, and if that wasn't brill enough, 'Lights Out for Darker Skies' over the end credits.

Hurray
You and me could write a crap romance

That's not quite on topic but I had the subtitles on watching telly earlier and when a mobile phone ad came on, the music (which was a totally dull, non-descript song) was described as #INDIE POP#. I hope you've all repented because the end of the world is clearly nigh.

The Smiths and New Order on that Jon Snow thing about the US election last night.

I suppose that's not that unlikely, actually.

Was very impressed to notice that they played a bit of Camera Obscura (If looks could kill) on the repeat of the last series of Primeval last night (its very strange that it doesn't appear on the DVD of the series)

There'd be more if it they were easier to clear. I managed to sneak some Lucksmiths and Field Mice into a show last week, but they had to be replaced because they didn't come under the BBC blanket agreement. I had the same thing with Math & Physics Club as well. There's other ways of course, but that's not my department.

I am making or breaking indiepop bands every day here! Throw me a bung and I'll get your band into that all important Gaelic tv market.
I've used a ton of Camera Obscura. I'm sure I deserve free tickets for the tour with the fortune I've made them in fees!

I know it's not, but the jingle for the new Yellow Pages (I think) advert sounds like an indiepop number.
This is bad comedy.
