I used to live round the corner from there and I went back the other week. No wonder the Dream Machine's in trouble: Lordship Lane's gone all Kensington High Street, I couldn't believe it. I really hope they manage to stay open and continue doing all their great things but it seems that everything round there is being polished up and turned into posh cafés and organic butchers.

I found a good record shop in Glasgow it sells lots of crazy Japanese records but there are some good more familiar bands in there too.

PS No one buy all the Vivian Girls stuff or I'll kill you.

In Toronto, Ontario, if you ever come visit:

Soundscapes - fantastic selection, super-friendly staff, really knowledgeable

Sonic Boom - huge selection, plenty of used CD's, used vinyl, used cassettes, used 8-tracks

Criminal Records - good staff, good selection

i didn't like the Amoeba in Berkeley. afterwards i felt a strong urge to go home and wash my hands. or, was that Rasputin? or, maybe it was just Berkeley.

there was a record store in Berkeley called Mod Lang that i really liked. they've since moved to i don't know where. that's where my girlfriend and i got most of our Smiths records.

Portland, OR has some nice record stores. i liked this place: http://www.jackpotrecords.com/

ah... i love mod lang!! i'm in los angeles, though, so it's a bit difficult to visit on a frequent basis.

locally, it's pretty tough to beat the ameoba records in hollywood. it's HUGE! i must also mention the dearly departed no life records, which sat on santa monica blvd for a number years in the 90s. small, friendly, and well stocked in sarah releases. those were the days...

Ooh, not seen that before. I have so much time and so few plans this weekend I might venture out west.

My favourite record shop is probably Mono, as it would be for most Glaswegians. But I also like Råkk&Rålls back in Oslo, which is a second hand shop where I always end up with about 20 records and some furniture I want to get.

It's in the suburbs in El Cerrito now. Maybe it's just the anodyne surroundings but I think it's completely lost its sparkle and quality. I went last summer and I don't think I bought anything. I don't think it was much smaller but it seemed to be lacking in gems. A shame. Mod Lang was a nice record store I visited on my very first trip to San Francisco in '99. :-(
There's more than one use for every part

Has anyone been to Action Records in Preston? Is there still a shop there? I might be in Preston in a few weeks.
And by me, I mean, Flexo.

There aren't any stores where i ever would find anything from sarah, fraction, k-records, cloudberry, hbtmr or any other "small" indie label in my part of Sweden but these stores are okay

Då & Då Hantverkaregatan 20 Malmö
Nice staff, weird hours, sometimes you find something thrilling in the 10kr box and sometimes you find a ok 7" you're looking for.s
bought a weather prophets 2X7", a wheat 7" and a split 7" including 22 pistepirrko in the 10kr box when i was there last week

Rundgång Near Möllevångstorget in Malmö
Local bands, post-rock, alternative pop, rock and electronic genres first and second-hand
but not much twee-a-like stuff. in the hipster part of malmoe and they also have t-shirts and such.

Repeat Records in Central Lund near Spyken highschool
It's not often find Felt,MBV,Dinosaur JR or such (maybe 2-3 times a year) but it's a nice shop and the staffs really nice. Pop isn't their main-genre but they seem to be popular by collectors of other stuff (often danish). A okay store which i mostly put in since it's close to my school and my home(the only second-hand record store in lund)

Paquito wrote:Sounds exactly like Backbeat Records in Edinburgh which is run by a maniac, who is the only person in the world who understands his complex filing system and which record is in which box (again, piled up to the ceiling and in completely random order) and where you never know when he will shout at you for wasting his time or be the most helpful man you will ever encounter. A shop you can easily spend a day in, unless you turn up there and there's a sign on a closed door saying "gone record buying in Europe, back in a week" or something similar.
i live just round the corner from backbeat, but i've not been in for ages. i'm fairly sure there is no filing `system', at least in the conventional sense of the word. you have to wonder what gems are hidden away in there. prices can be at bit mad as well (both ways though). the guy seemed to like me - quite often he would shut the shop while he went looking for stuff.

at some point i'm going to go in and give him a big list of stuff to look for.

Dream Machine Update: They have to shut up shop in Lordship Lane (:(), but are apparently going to start doing record fairs with bands at the Half Moon in Herne Hill (the first one is on April 5th).

On a more positive note, went into The Hive in Greenwich the other day (on Creek Road, where Flying Duck used to be). They do quite a good line in reissued 180g vinyl at reasonable prices, plus lots of souls sevens too. It's run by the same guys that used to have the stall in the flea market. Well worth checking out, if you happen to be visiting the area.
