maybe they should put less on, rather than promoting 4-6 expensive weekenders per year for a limited audience, given that everyone's already got fuck all money...?

just a thought, like

i'd rather they did too much than nothing at all, of course, but it might be sensible for them to rein theirselves in a bit, eh?

(well, i suppose they are doing from next year onwards)

oh well. new GBV album again!

Bob Pollard's online store is having a $5.00 CD blowout sale, there's a lot of good old stuff that's been marked down -- if you haven't had a chance to pick up albums like Speak Kindly of Your Volunteer Fire Department (with Doug Gillard) or Go Back Snowball (with Mac Mccaughan) now might be a good time. (I don't know how reasonable shipping to the UK is, but if they have variable shipping options, it's probably not too bad.)

what does everyone make of the reunion records then?

i like em ok, but for some reason haven't clicked with any of them completely

sorta wonder if i've been expecting too much though. i guess the joy of albums like Alien Lanes is that there's a mixture of barnstorming powerpop classics and oddball freak/psych doodles... maybe i'm expecting these new records to be chock-full of instant classics, and not really giving them a chance cos of that...

or maybe i'm overanalysing it and they're really good but not great

ach, i'm just glad they're back at all really

has anyone heard the tribute record that No More Fake Labels put out last year? Sing For Your Meat?

i only just got hold of a copy but it's really, really good. plenty of enthusiastically faithful efforts, but also a mess of interesting reinventions. top marks to Western Civ doing My Valuable Hunting Knife, Cymbals Eat Guitars' Gleemer and Crooked Fingers' take on Tractor Rape Chain

recommended for GBV nerds and newbies alike
