Saw them not too long ago and they were great as usual. They did an acoustic set and an electric set (no opening band). They played Ohm in both sets! Have fun!

When I saw them they did one three-hour set, and it was the hottest gig I've ever been to, and even while sweating INTENSELY for three hours I still had a lovely time.

Also I've recommended the new album to workmates and my girlfriend's mum, and got very positive responses from all. How could anyone NOT like Yo La Tengo?

The very first time I saw Yo La Tengo was a week or so after I joined Bowlie (the forum) and it was with a Bowlie girl who had an extra ticket. My first ever online 'date'. It was lovely.

Sorry Will, I only just saw this. Yes, I went last night, and yes I'm suffering like a bastard today after sinking 5 pints of Estrella Damm/Budweiser and 3 rum and cokes. Amazing weren't they!

I wish I'd have seen this earlier, could have met up in the Cornerhouse beforehand. Gah!

I had shamefully never really listened to YLT until elvistears of this parish was kind enough to buy me the new album for my birthday. Now I'm onboard, where do I go from here?

I haven't heard the new one yet, so I don't know how it compares to the various older albums, but my two favourite albums are 'And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside-Out' and 'I Can Hear the Heart Beating As One'. The great thing about them is that, to my knowledge, they've never done a duff album. I kind of class them alongside bands like Teenage Fanclub, because they've been going for a long time and have continued to do relatively similar things without ever slipping in quality. In short: they're brilliant, and anything else you buy will be great.

I will look into those those, thank you! Sometimes I get put off listening to a band that already has a huge back catalogue, but I think this exploration will certainly be worthwhile.

I also reserve the right to change my mind about my two favourite albums at any given point. You really will not regret delving into YLT, though.

I agree with those choices! And Then Nothing... is my favourite and I Can Hear the Heart... is close behind. The new one is right up there though!

And then for something different but very lovely, everyone should listen to Fakebook. As (mainly) a covers album it may not be the best place to start, but it's not just a covers album. It's great, and probably the one I listen to most.

It's a covers album, but some of the covers are Yo La Tengo covers!

Electr-O-Pura is a great record, the perfect mix of loud and soft (sometimes at once). Summer Sun is especially great if you fancy a gentle zone-out party.
I Am Not Afraid Of You And I Will Beat Your Ass is a great mix of really poppy pop and krautrocky noisier things. I love that record. They're all wonderful! I envy your quest.

I'm writing a review of the London show too. I'll post it when it's done. Most bands would come a'cropper with the quiet set / loud set thing. Not Yo La Tengo!

And Then Nothing... was the first one i got, and in all honesty i didn't really 'get it' at first. possibly because i was expecting this noisy experimental pop band, and that album is so unbelievably quiet with the exception of one or two tracks. i love it now though... suspect it helped to put it in context with their other stuff

i'd agree with I Can Hear The Heart... as an introductory record, but i'd suggest Painful would make a better companion for curious ears... then just work yr way through it all!

either way yr in for a treat

I think you'll love them Chris! There is also a 3 disc collection called "Prisoners Of Love" that has tracks and outtakes from 1986-2002. They've done a lot of good stuff since 2002 though. They're a pretty reliable band as far as albums go and I agree with the other posts.
