Teenage Fanclub

Post by roobee » Tue Jun 17, 2008 17:09

Blimey, there's no TFC thread.

They've just finished a 3 night stint in Glasgow's leafy westend - this is what they did on each night, for those that may be interested and don't know.
Saturday 14th June : Electric Chestnuts - This evening will feature well known material presented in the full-on familiar manner. Expect electric guitars, loud drums, amplifiers, shouting.

Sunday 15th June : Acoustic Chestnuts - This evening will feature well known material naturally suited to acoustic instruments. Expect acoustic guitars, slower songs, pipes, slippers, warmth and quietness.

Monday 16th June : Live Obscurities - This evening, as the name suggests, will feature slightly lesser known material presented in an electric format. Expect album tracks, b-sides, cover versions, the gnashing of teeth, the odd chestnut.
I went along last night and it was really very good indeed. They did loads of stuff from Thirteen (Escher, Fear of Flying, Ret Liv Dead, Gene Clark) and Catholic Education and finished off with Alcoholiday and Sparky's Dream, coming back to the stage with the crowd chanting 'wan mare tune! wan mare tune!'. There's something very special about Teenage Fanclub (or the Teenies as someone so wrongly calls them) and I'm not even going to begin to attempt to talk about their music as I'll only sound like an arse, but yeah! The Fannies! They make me feel joyous.

Here is a random video from one of those dunderheads at gigs who would rather stand with a camera than watch the band in front of them. This is my favourite TFC song for today.

Should this be in the indiepop forum? I was confused by their lack of hair slides.

i'm really sorry to de-rail your thread, but, i saw national jazz trio of scotland were supporting on one night: did you see/enjoy them?

i don't think i know/like enough teenage fanclub to drag this back on topic. i thought the recent one (manmade?, or something?) with a white and purply nice sleeve sounded kind of like a super furries animal lp, production-wise.

Aw, sounds like a great show, Trickster! I haven't seen them since they played Hogmany in Glasgow in 2000/1. They don't come to the States anymore for some reason. I'll get to see Norman perform with Daniel Johnston @ the Old Fruit Market (Glasgow) in July, though!

I can't believe there's not TFC thread either. They are one of a handful bands that I've held an enduring love for and who's music doesn't really date. I love that they met at a dinosaur jr. gig. I'm probabably one of the few fans (maybe not, what do I know?) whose favorite TFC album is A Catholic Education. I've had it on vinyl, cassette, and CD and never tire of it. "Every Picture I Paint" is in my top ten of all time and I think it is probably the greatest love song ever. I get happysadhappy whenever I listen to it. In fact, I have to listen to it (even though I'm in a bit of a sad mood; I just love it so). If a man ever wrote words like that about me, I would keel over.

I know someone has posted this SnubTV clip before, but I just love the fresh-faced Norman and Gerard and the utter graveness with which the interviewer poses the question about being compared to Dino jr. ("Is it valid?!??") I would love to play a drinking game to this video to the number of times Norman says "sort of." It's got a lovely flannel-waving live performance of "Everything Flows" as well:

i'd love to know a bit more about the relationship between dino and teenage fanclub. i read something a while ago about dinosaur playing glasgow, in front of most of the little scottish bands of the time, and them all going forth, growing their hair out and playing wild mascis riffs from then on.

don fleming is probably the common link

he's like thurston moore's taller, more sarcastic brother

he was in the velvet monkeys, half japanese, b.a.l.l., gumball and played with dinosaur, the fanclub and produced a ton of bands

yeh, I guess dinosaur were an influence plus redd kross and the pastels, amongst others

I should dig out some hairy hi-fi's and pastelism's, the interviews within capture that early period of the fanclub pretty sweetly

I may have to dig out my extremely mottled and well worn 'catholic education' t-shirt, it's held together by 'holes' essentially... and sweat and tears and heartache

it was luck really, I loved loved loved the boy hairdressers and I was digging on the pastels (as always) and half japanese (same) back then and when 'everything flows' came out on paperhouse I was hip to it already via the likes of hairy hi-fi/pastelism but still completely overawed and floored by it when I heard it and so when wandering into rough trade in neal's yard and seeing this t-shirt I just had to have it to go with this single that I absolutely loved (still love)

the lp followed about a week after

I wore the heck out of it (both the t-shirt and the rekkid)

it's my favourite fannies t-shirt, that and the subbuteo logo one

I've got one of them scotland football ones with 13 on the back, it's too snug on me but I'd never part with it (although I'm open to offers, so that's a lie)

have you heard 'the flying helmet' demo?

if the boy hairdressers decided to reform as some sort of self-indulgent vanity project and do an lp or an ep I'd buy it

the teenage fanclub were nearly called superdrug, that's a less than interesting factoid I've dredged up from the drains of my memory

i believe Duglas stewart suggested they call themselves Teenage Fanny, and they decided that Teenage Fanclub seemed the next best thing if they wanted to ever get any airplay, advertising listings or gigs, this of course could be one of them tales, but i think its real.

that dirty duglas

does anybody remember him on snub tv when they filmed in his house (possibly his nan's house?) and he showed off his throbbing gristle lp

it was the same episode the bandits performed and norman was dressed up as an old pensioner sat on the stage playing guitar

I wonder whatever became of him?
