Re: What should our magazine be called? Suggestions until Au

I think somewhere in my initial post I had something like UNCLOUDED with underneath DIY. Pop. Life.

I do like 'What We Do Is Secret' too, but on the other hand I want what we do to be far from a secret: everyone can know (and read) about it. I'm overthinking this name thing. I'm going to let it rest for the weekend.

'Hidden Track' may now be my favourite one from the zillions that I suggested. I still like 'Target Practice', but we don't want to confuse gun happy creeps of course.

'Signal Box' is also still a good name.

I like Signal Box but imagine it would bring unsuspecting train fanatics to the party. But that would be a good thing.

Here's three with pop incorporated: Pop! Look & Listen, Pop Front and Popscotch. The last would have to feature Scottish bands in it though in every issue.

I'm not 100% sure about the 'pop' in the title. It's fine of course, but I don't think we NEED it. We'll also have some punk and folk and stuff after all.

Kitten Conspiracy.

Although you can't have that 'cause it's earmarked for me and the missus' currently fictional band who do twee cover versions of uber-rude dancehall/booty bass classics.

My current shortlist of 10 for voting would be:

Anorak Pop
Dreamabout
Heavenly Pop
Hidden Track
Pop! Look & Listen
Pop, etc.
Rock and/or Roll
Signal Box
Target Practice
What We Do Is Secret

for several reasons (like other names already being used by record labels, zines, companies). Am I leaving anything out that someone was really taken with?

If it were completely up to me at this point I'd go for Hidden Track.

Am I right to assume that the lack of new suggestions and lack of negative reply to the above question means that I can close the suggestions phase and put the 10 names shortlisted above in a poll? Because I'm not going to wait until August 1 if there's no need.

I know everyone is probably pondering more female names for a magazine right now.

Before you do the poll, I don't think you should feel obliged to automatically call the magazine whatever is the most popular in it, if you're really taken with Hidden Track then go for it! I think the one privilege of taking on such a big wonderful job should be to call it whatever you want to.

Ha, thanks Lisa. It'll still be nice to see what other people think. With me being Dutch and all I'm not always the right person to see how crap an English name is.

Candy Twist? Oh well.

I agree Knibbles. Dennis - the vision and leadership for the magazine has come from you, so I'd say, take into account people's views but then make an executive decision. Oh, personally, I'd add Unclouded to the shortlist.

I voted Hidden Track! I like that's it's about music but doesn't seem limited to one genre.

And yeah! Dennis!

it's doing that thing where I can see the results but can't actually vote (because I can see the results)

I'm not sure about hidden track (on the basis that most 'hidden tracks' on cds aren't all that and some cleverdick will no doubt point this out in a pithy one sentence review of our magazine on their tawdry blog)

I hadn't thought of that. I bloody hate hidden tracks on albums.
I went for Signal Box anyway.

As a teenager I had the strange habbit of often falling asleep to Nirvana's 'Nevermind' and to then suddenly wake up with a shock to that hidden song, 'Endless, nameless'.

Yes, most hidden tracks aren't the greatest. Still like it as a name though.

I'm not sure what's going on with the not being able to vote or what I can do about it. I can personally also not vote anymore, even though I've only used one of my options. Sorry?

All publicity is good publicity, right? Well, no. But if someone is going to slag off our brilliant magazine (no expectations, dears) on the basis of not liking some secret songs (or our name), well, boo to them.

If I could vote I'd vote for What We Do Is Secret simply because I don't like Hidden Track much.

My favourite is Signal Box but that's not doing it for some so at the risk of being accused of using Olympic badminton style tactics my choice is What We Do Is Secret. But I can't vote anyway.

I have no idea what the not being able to vote thing is about. Sorry.

I like 'Hidden Track' because it's not genre-specific but hints at the music underground that's usually hidden from the general public's eye and also not present in the main magazines. But you could say the same for 'What We Do Is Secret', obviously. 'Hidden Track' is a more music-specific name than 'WWDIS' though.

I did the same and woke up during 'Sick Party' from Ash's debut long-player 1977. Not good.

I voted for Hidden Track which I think is comfortably the best of the bunch.

I also like Target Practice, non-genre specific and spiky.

Can't immediately see where / who it came from, but I think What We Do Is Secret is genius - got my vote instantly. I do like titles with more than two or three words.

Andy (a fog of ideas) coined it. It's a song by the Germs as well.
