The Orchids

Post by crystalball » Sun Sep 30, 2007 11:36

I feel the need to start a thread about my favourite band of all time. Especially because they're playing in Glasgow next week and I am gutted I can't go.

It's only an old thread because no-one else likes the Orchids. :)

I see your 'Defy the Law' and I raise you a 'Walter'.

Oooh... 'Bemused Confused and Bedraggled'!

I really wouldn't mind if we were to do this all day.

OK so we don't have to do this all day. But I just wanted to say that it's been a terrible morning and now I feel good again just because we talked about the Orchids for two seconds and I am listening to Striving for the Lazy Perfection and that's all I ever want to be doing in life. Thank you. :)

richpassivity and humblebee! It looks like every night next week Marc Riley will be broadcasting the Orchids Peel session from 1991 on BBC 6 Music. Eeee, exciting! I don't think I've heard it before.

I think The Orchids are rather splendid, I think they're (sometimes) unfairly maligned here- I don't know that they've ever been a band I've gone nuts over but I bought the reissues and (particularly with the first two) was glad I did, it was rather satisfying hearing some/many of those songs again- I know at the time me and a friend were big fans of Ian Carmichael's production (both with The Orchids and with The Bachelor Pad), my friend once gave me a breakdown of how Carmichael's production resembles hip hop production and gave me lots of examples now sadly lost through time

I think The Orchids are a band of quality in a rather unassuming way, I think that's why they meet with sneers

I like Orchids dude's voice too, it's quite fragile sounding- I like that fragility

I love the first album and the singles from that time (as included on the re-issue) but I can't get into any of their other stuff. It just sounds a bit bland to me. Maybe I should listen more. They're certainly not one of my favourites anyways.

What time is that show on? I've got a nice new digital radio so I can bump this proper.

Respect. And agree. I like how it often sounds as if his voice is going to give out. It's tender and goes so well with many of their lyrics.

So that session turned out to be from 1990, not 1991. Sorry. I nearly killed myself dancing to 'Frank de Salvo' in the front room, it was dead good.

The other songs on that session are 'Caveman', 'Dirty Clothing' and 'And When I Wake Up' which was on that Grimsby Fishmarket compilation tape.

The Orchids make me lose my mind a little bit.
