ooh, he was talking about his love for Billy Fury in London last night, did a little shuffle and sung part of one of his songs. He was so sincere about it.

That Sitting alone at the movies song was brilliant, he just did that completely solo with his guitar slung over his back, arms all over the place, lots of moving around.

I'd forgot the mixtapes, i was going to buy a couple but felt significantly inadequate to be able to choose which to get.
and that snare drum, that drum roll

I feel stupid to have missed the London show now, after reading all this. I was sitting at home feeling miserable when I could have been standing against a wall being miserable with davo and watching Calvin do his thing. Davo, if you're going to Broadstairs on Monday, will you give me a shout please?

Are you going to go, Marianthi? You should. It's worse being 850 miles away knowing that he's played in spitting distance to where I've lived in England. And he's playing Sheffield on Wednesday - that was the spitoon of where I lived in England. I got so down about it yesterday that I made a Calvin t-shirt.

haha. i suppose so...

it was a great set though, wasn't it? gutted he'd sold out of his new record on vinyl though.

i picked up two of the mix tapes (Japanese Underground '84-'85 and Girls & Girl Groups 1950-60) and a label compilation tape for his mate's label. all looks ace - not had time to fully investigate yet though.

Anyway, its £24 return to get to Broadstairs. Which is putting me off i have to admit. (I havent looked if i can get the day off yet)

i just saw m. ward tonight, actually, as part of she & him. he's great, although the concert was super short... i guess because zooey deschanel only has like, 14 songs written (all as beautiful as she is, though, UGH).
young and indie famous.

I saw Calvin last night in Glasgow and it was an absolute joy. It's not very often you see 45 year old men wearing pink flip-flops singing an acapella song about sitting alone at the movies while cutting some shapes! There really is no-one out there like Calvin, the way he referred to the support band Withered Hand's "compact discs", the pink lemonade on sale, the fact it was in an upstairs church hall (if only it had been in the church itself, with the pews and everything!) and it was only 5 notes to get in. That is what it's all about. Aye, a good night.
They don't call me Hawkeye Gilhooley... at all

Among the boxes with cds sent by my dad is the Crashing Through box set, so I'm listening to the yellow album for the first time in forever. I had forgotten how good the songs are, especially those sung by heather.

Oh, I had somehow never noticed that Heather is talking on the background of The Fall. I only took off my headphones twice to see what Dimitra was saying...

read this elsewhere online, made me laugh. apparently the footage isn't on youtube, hope it turns up sometime.
Is it true that Calvin was arrested on an episode of True Stories of the Highway Patrol? I think that's the name of the show, close enough (early to mid 90s).
That is true. He was on tour with Halo Benders and I think Martsch had weed in the van or something. I've never seen it but friends have. The only part I remember being described was Calvin cuffed on the ground saying "this is just ridiculous".

has anyone seen this 5-part interview: http://www.vbs.tv/video.php?id=1865785871" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

my favorite part is when he talks about buying a bag of sweaters for 23 cents a pound.

I was in this band years ago. It's so weird to be cruising along on the internet and see a band you were in mentioned, especially since I don't think we ever played outside of the Boise, Idaho area (except for once where we played at CMJ to maybe 40 or 50 people).

Anyway, sorry for the derail.

Hi all, saw this was an older thread, but thought I might revive it as I've been hearing about how Calvin is touring as part of The Hive Dwellers, but really haven't been able to find any more info about the band. Anyone know who is in the lineup? Think they're doing a show here in Cali w/ one of Ian Svenonius's projects in a few months. Guess I could always just wait and find out.

On a sidenote - last time I saw CJ play solo, he broke out "Can We Kiss" from What Was Me. Straight up caterwauling, but my heart still went boom.
