Indie Pop?
Im finding it hard to know what the users on this forum perceive as indie pop, maybe I have the wrong idea but I'd be curious about what you guys identify as Indie Pop and what examples of bands would follow?

Re: Indie Pop?
Why don't you tell us what you think might be Indiepop? We'll let you know. Seems pretty clear to me what is and what isn't - It's not something that can be confused with, say, reggae :)
ETA - Bob Marley: Not Indiepop.

five to six, that's what the time is.
Re: Indie Pop?
There is no one absolute rule as to what Indiepop is. Everyone will have their own idea and they all tend to get rather heated and sulky when someone else says "That's not indiepop" / "yes it is" / "No it's not" / Yes It Is!!" etc etc until one of them dies....I tend to follow this rule which helps me live quite a pleasant life...If i like it, I like it, regardless of who it's by, or what anyone else calls it. And if I don't like it...then i call it shite! It's not a bad rule to have....

Re: Indie Pop?
easy... if it sounds like some combination of 60's girl groups, the velvets & the smiths, it's probably indiepop.

Re: Indie Pop?
Ah yes, but that misses out on the obvious Buzzcocks punk influences. And also the whole Orange Juice postcard thing, not to mention the jangle guitar of The Byrds or the shambling DIY of the TVPs.thomasintrouble wrote:easy... if it sounds like some combination of 60's girl groups, the velvets & the smiths, it's probably indiepop.
It's whatever you want it to be, really.
not really here

Re: Indie Pop?
I'm wondering if we can narrow the definition even further. "sounds like Orange Juice" might just do it :-)

Re: Indie Pop?
For beginners I do still always think that Pitchfork article is a very decent way to get some idea about indiepop. Despite the 'twee' title and other quite cringeworthy generalizations it gives starters some insight about what we're talking about here.

Indie pop is not just "indie" that is "pop." Not too many people realize this, or really care either way. But you can be sure indie pop's fans know it.

Re: Indie Pop?
ahh sweet thanks the pitchfork article was interesting. I guess I was just curious about what peoples perceptions of indie pop was, not exactly asking a specific definition of it since Indie Pop can would be hard to define specifically.RITH wrote:For beginners I do still always think that Pitchfork article is a very decent way to get some idea about indiepop. Re: Indie Pop?
I suppose it'd be hard to claim that Indie Pop consists of only one sound, I guess its more of a loose umbrella term for several different sounds. Anyways thanks guys for helping clarify things for me and giving me insight into your perspectives of the 'genre'

Re: Indie Pop?
Though I'd probably call it "indiepop" (though I generally refer to it simply as 'pop') rather than "indie pop" cos that makes me think of popular-style "indie" bands, which is very much removed from what I consider indiepop. See also indie/pop.
Should I have just kept my mouth shut? Yea.

Re: Indie Pop?
Simon - you're right that indiepop isn't a single sound. It's not really a genre either. You can't define it by what it sounds like. It's much more a set of values than a sound.

Re: Indie Pop?
I'd never thought of it that way before but it's possibly a good one. If we accept that then an indiepop band is an indiepop band purely because we say it is without any other explanation needed. It would make us all elitest though!thomasintrouble wrote:I think it's more a set of people, and almost all of them post here ;-)

Re: Indie Pop?
But surely indiepop should be more socialist than elitist?
