they were really great in london tonight, and it always seems they have excellent songs i've never heard before so it bodes well for future releases!

I bought it off them at their show in Sheffield last night and I'm listening to it for the first time now and it's wonderful!

The sound of it is great - on the first one they sounded a bit far away but this one sounds like they're in the room with me. I love the Middle Ones to pieces!

They are lovely, everything is lovely but I don't know what to make of the new record. Is it a bit gloomy compared to the previous one (which I thought was enchanting) or am I just feeling too dejected to enjoy it?

I prefer this one to the other album. I don't think it's gloomy at all..

Or maybe I've just gone through grumpy and come out the other side so everything is rainbows and lollipops? I just can't tell any more.

This is probably my favourite part of the whole album. I can see why certain songs come across as gloomy, I think, but the overarching theme I get from it so far is one of... I dunno, emotional survival, faith in the kindness of others? There is a lot in this album, lyrically, that I can identify with and that is really hopeful. There are some less hopeful bits, of course, but I love love love this:

Driving away I feel stupidly happy again, I feel more like myself every day, since you said I should stop worrying. Sleeping on trains always used to make me feel safe, made me think that I could be more brave, made me think I could stop worrying, stop worrying now. Today I ought to feel bad for the loss of the hero I used to have, but maybe that's just cos I can finally stop worshipping people I see who seem better at living than me, seem louder and faster and free, maybe I should stop worshipping.

Grace is in a new band called EXPENSIVE. They're quite different from The Middle Ones (electronic instead of guitars) but I like it.

I haven't been to the Middle Ones' show 'My Robot Heart' with Molly Naylor at the Edinburgh Fringe as yet - but am certainly looking to check it out!!

They'll be here in Edinburgh for about 4 weeks, I think. Sounds as if they're having a great time.

They are also doing a gig of their own at Henry's Cellar Bar this coming Saturday.

Crap. Will be at a Stand show tomorrow finishing 10 minutes before that. Don't think that's doable. Get to see them supporting Jeffrey Lewis at the end of the month in Glasgow though.

They are playing at Henry's Cellar Bar at about 8:45pm tomorrow night, if that's of any help?

I went to their 'My Robot Heart' show this afternoon.

It is a lovely show. Molly is a fabulous storyteller and the music of the MIddle Ones is a perfect fit for this.

I would recommend it!

I think that Katie from the Just Joans has come over from Glasgow to see it too - but haven't seen her recently to find out what she thought of it.

I'm actually thinking of going to see it again before they finish their run in just over 2 weeks' time. Hopefully this will be possible.

Here's a wee blog by Molly about her Fringe 2012 experiences so far:

I didn't know about the Henry's gig but we've got the kids this weekend anyway. Definitely going to see the Fringe show at some point, and will also be at the Jeff Lewis gig, which promises to be amazing. Also, it's the day before (or maybe after) Kid Canaveral playing in Edinburgh. Going to feel a bit fragile after that weekend I imagine...

I'll be seeing Nina Conti at that time I'm afraid.

The Middle Ones are doing another gig in Edinburgh tonight - at the Forest Cafe in Tollcross.

Grace's band 'Expensive' were great last night. Hope they will play more gigs in the future.

Image

the middle ones cover "the bike that i ride" and grace covers "girls in green" (and appears in the video for "my neighbour's music") on the new bucky album women, ladies and girls which is a sort of mixtape/compilation of their songs sung by female friends. there are more videos from the album on the youtube channel here. "collage/mosaic" is particularly great.

also featured: miss ludella black, lisa marr, lianne hall, caroline martin and tons of talented others, but the star is probably their elderly and incredibly well-spoken aunt cis.

it's on sale at the bucky website and all proceeds from the album go to plan's because i am a girl campaign.

bucky rule.
