I think 'Knees as Sweet as These' is one of the finest songs I've heard since the last finest song I heard. It's completely amazing.

It really is, isn't it? The lyrics are brilliant, too. I choked up the first time I heard it.

There goes my blood
Funny how it leaves me
And quickly slides away
So ashamed to run so openly.

The lyrics throughout are amazing. It's making me want to go back to 'The Beautiful Light' and listen to those lyrics more closely.

I’ve just heard they’ve split up. I don’t think I’ve ever been so gutted on hearing of a band’s demise.

In my opinion The Beautiful Light is the best album since, well, I don’t know, years, maybe since Psychocandy, maybe it’s the best album ever? No, fuck it, The Beautiful Light is the best god damn album that has ever been released.

Bands have gone entire careers, sometimes spanning decades, and haven’t come up with as many pop hooks as Slow Down Tallahassee managed on one record. If a 60s girl group had performed Never Be Lonely Again they’d still be swooning about it now. If The Strokes had written the song The Beautiful Light it would have topped all end of year poles. No garage band has ever managed to get near it. From sexy nursery rhymes to poisonous lullabies through some of the most joyous pop ever committed to record Slow Down Tallahassee had it all.

But the jewel in the crown for me is Till I’m Gone. I’ve never before heard a song that more successfully articulates what it feels like when the depression hits. Maybe I’m wrong, maybe it’s not about that, but it strikes a chord, feels so personal and actually comforts.
“I’m hell manifest, I am meaningless, and the doors close me in and I slide down the wall till I’m gone.”

I love indiepop. Most of the time I love that I love indiepop. It makes me feel special that I can see how vital, life affirming and wonderful it is when most of the world are missing it. Indiepop is special, so I must be because I’m one of the few that can see it.

But sometimes I hate that I like it. Why hasn’t the world been listening to The Beautiful Light for the last three years? Why aren’t Slow Down Tallahassee lounging on Malibu beach sipping Martinis on the profits of their fantastic endeavours? Why are brilliant bands ignored, left to struggle and ultimately implode by a useless record industry and a philistine public? It’s all so frustrating.

So now I’m going to cheer myself up by listening to The Lovely Eggs new single. It’s that good and so addictive it should probably be illegal. And then I’m going to buy Slow Down Tallahassee’s new album. If it’s even half as good as their first it will knock the socks off anything that will trouble the charts this year.

That's lovely. Both albums deserve that kind of adoration.

Great first post, Jay. Keep 'em coming like that!

Man alive, I was so in love with Slow Down Tallahassee the first time I saw them, at their first gig. I'd heard a few mp3s and got very excited about them - especially 'UR Grace UR', which I was more than mildly obsessed with for a while. And then we all went to the Washington afterwards and when the SDT girls arrived I did we-are-not-worthies and was deeply embarrassed about it whenever I saw them for ages afterwards. Which was a lot, cos I don't think I missed any of their first ten or so gigs after that.

It riles me wildly that they were completely fucking ignored here in their home city. The 'alternative music' establishment here is so resolutely masculine that maybe it was inevitable: they're only interested in women performers when they're solo and 'kooky' or sensitive or a bit agonised, so the strident, we're-in-charge tone struck by SDT, and the pure pop joy, must have been too much of a challenge for them.

One of my favourite memories was seeing them support Tilly & the Wall at the Buffalo Bar (and turning up there and bumping into Markie, oh hello!). Some of the Tillies were standing in that DJ/backstage bit off to the right as you're looking at the stage. During 'Kiss Me Again' they were gasping and laughing in surprise to each other about the filthy lyrics. I get the impression it would take a lot to shock Tilly & the Wall. Slow Down Tallahassee had a lot.

I'm going to stop now so that I can turn this into an article for a fanzine.

ps. I don't think Tilly and Wall were as shocked as ian's dad stood at the front of the audience when we sang 'Kiss me again'.
for shame!

Feel free to reconsider the break-up in the light of what you're reading here, Claire. :)

There's a handy page for hearing snips of all the songs from the new abum HERE

We'll be doing a free download-only single very soon, too. Just not decided which songs yet :)

Completely ace review on Sounds XP. Uttery justified, of course ;)

http://soundsxp.com/artman2/publish/alb ... _Cuh.shtml
When they sing “I died inside the moment I set eyes on you”, you just know it’s no metaphor and that their protagonist will end up dead-eyed, empty and embracing oblivion with a near-euphoric “I am almost gone!”.....a massively catchy record; I defy anyone not to end up unconsciously singing the most unsuitable things while wandering the supermarket aisles after listening.

it's such a shame we'll never get to hear these songs played live. Is there no chance at all of a farewell gig?

I've developed a mild obsession with 'Chemicals' this week.

That sounds awful. I hope my Mum isn't reading this.

Will some or all of the members of the band continue to make music under a different name?

No farewell gig, sadly. They even turned down a 6Music session for Marc Riley a couple of weeks ago. I hope they do something else in the future, but for the moment there's no plans.

I've uploaded the song "Curly Cuh" to my soundcloud profile:

Please share! :)

Hi, i'm currently in another band called 'Nature Set' along with Reenie from the Long Blondes. We're releasing a single soon as part of Elefant Record's singles club, which is exciting!
