Athens! Popfest! 2008! Woo hoo!

Post by squirrelboutique » Tue Jan 29, 2008 10:43 pm

Yeah! This isn't till August, but I'm starting this thread now for a bunch of reasons I shall now share with you.

1. I want to chatter and jabber on for at least 6 months, and by chatter and jabber I mean make jokes about it not being called poopfest and not being in Athens, Greece (no feta, this is not Sparta etc.) and go on and on about Michael Stipe's hair.

2. Athens Popfest is possibly the Greatest Place on Earth. There are lots of friendly people, fantastic bands, the 40 Watt, handclapping, balloons, cheap, cheap, cheap, cheap alcohol, and inexpensive lodgings and restaurants and things.

3. The dates have been announced!

I will NOT miss poopfest this year, damnit. It's a few days before my birthday and being presented by Happy Happy Birthday To Me Records, so I'm taking that as a sign!

I don't see any bands listed yet, but if last year is any measure, it should be fantabulous.

This is the point at which I always ask: "It will all be air conditioned, right??!" My northern constitution doesn't mix well w/August in GA.

And I've still not made my pilgrimage to the 40 Watt Club. It's my civic duty.

You should totally come. I'll bring an extra map.

I just read somewhere (Facebook) that this will be the last Popfest for awhile.

I wonder if that's true/why?

And the same post said the lineup would be out May 15.

The same thing was said about the 2006 Popfest. It mainly has to do with the time/hassle involved.

Oh! That thing I posted in the opening post was from last year. So, um, the lineup maybe won't be announced on May 15, and never mind that last one for awhile thing.

I hate stupid 2008 because I keep forgetting it's 2008.

Actually, 2008 has been pretty good apart from me forgetting it's 2008.

After my friend went to the last Lollapalooza, I've really been wanting to trek to a festival.
This seems like the best choice, I'm thinking.

How much are tickets generally?

In 2006 it was $40 for a pass that let you in to everything.

I'm definitely going to try and make it to this. It would be the world's most fabulous road trip destination.

Athens has built up into almost mythic proportions in my mind due a high school infatuation w/the music scene. I really want to go to the 40 Watt Club before I die. Problem is, letting anything below the Mason Dixon touch my flesh in August probably would kill me; that and the cost of the flights that time of year. Could someone with "connections" lobby for moving Popfest to the dead of winter? It should swap with N.E. Popfest, which is in Novemeber and would frighten southerners. Thank you!

It's all indoors though!

It is a little hot walking back and forth, but it's totally worth it. And everything in Athens is so, so, so inexpensive. I think a beer at the 40 Watt was $1.50, and a shot of Wild Turkey was $3.00.

"a little hot" to the woman in S. Florida is OHMYGODIAMGONNADIE to the Bostonian. But for what I save in beer money, I could maybe buy an airconditioned space suit.

We've been to every Athens Popfest so far. The 2004 fest was brutally hot and 2007 was by far the worse. We DROVE from our hotel the 2 blocks to the Little Kings. But then you get a refreshing air conditioned club and cheap drinks! They're signature drink is quite delicious - Maker's Mark + spicey ginger ale and the Mojitos are lovely!

We're on the fence about going this year, it's cheaper to drive, but our air conditioning may be seriously broken and I'm not sure if I can get the time off.

It's a great time tho!

Ooh, really? Well, then you might be okay, ms alongwalkhome. I didn't think it was terrible last year, just kind of a bit uncomfortable to walk around in. I can also testify to the life-giving, hydrating effect of Wild Turkey.

(And being in the 40 watt is totally worth it.)

I'm pretty sure they're playing!

Their MySpace doesn't say so, but the HHBTM site says they're resuming touring after Athens Popfest, so I would guess that means they're playing.

Well done, Scoops.

Feck. That line up gets better and better. If a miracle occurs and there's a cheap flight fr. Boston, I'm so going. It's my birthday month, does that justify an 8 gazillion dollar plain ticket?
