UK: Record Store Day- April 17th 2010

Post by linus » Fri Apr 17, 2009 09:40

taking it's lead from the success of record store day in the US, around 50 stores across the UK are putting on instore live performances, cake sales and selling special limited releases by- amongst others- the smiths; new order; beck/sonic youth; tom waits and a 'rare' domino compilation

various bands are playing including graham coxon and patrick wolf

there are only 300 independent record stores remaining in the uk, a quarter of all the stores open a year ago have since closed down

I didn't know where else to put this- perhaps a thread already exists- but (with short notice admittedly) wondered if folks would like to post what's happening near them here?

Ooh, I want those Sonic Youth things. Would it be somewhat missing the point if I wait around for somebody to stick them on the internet?

I quite fancy trying to get hold of that Sonic Youth 7" too, but i don't like my chances. Still, theres a whole day of instores at the London Rough Trades which looks nice, i'll be going for the breakfast Betty and the Werewolves show i reckon, and then maybe head on over to Rough Trade West for Nat Johnson, maybe.

Belfast only has one independent record store left. That's such a depressing thought, especially since it was once home to the legendary Good Vibrations. Glasgow is still pretty vibrant on the ol' indie record store front, which is heartening.

Rough trade are running a raffle with the prize being a chance to buy the Sonic Youth single(s)
There are two exclusives for this year’s Record Store Day that are ridiculously limited. They are the Sonic Youth/Beck split 7 and the Sonic Youth/Jay Reatard split 7 and we only have a handful of each so to be fair to everyone we’ll be running a raffle.
From 10am we’ll be giving out raffle tickets (one per person), We’ll draw the raffle at 4pm and if your number is called you’ll be able to buy one of these future collectors items.
I guess that means i wont be getting there when the shop opens now as i really cant be arsed with that.

I got:

* The Stooges - 1969 / Real Cool Time
* MC5 - Kick Out The Jams / Motor City Is Burning
* The Smiths - The Headmasters Ritual / Oscillate Wildly

They look very pretty :-)

Our local shop had the Sonic Youth/Jay Reatard split - but it was £10. Thought that a bit steep for a 7" single!

I really fancy the Thermals/Cribs split, but suspect i'll be beaten to it fairly sharpish by the Cribs' rabid fanbase.

i meant to get over to rough trade last year but on the day couldn't be arsed. as it turned out the only thing i really wanted (the pavement live lp) wasn't even sold in the uk. picked it up a few weeks later when it appeared on the new releases list of a shop in the bay area.

was in the states a few weeks back & there were tons of last year's RSD releases still in record shops: seemed like sub pop pressed large quantities of their releases, which is good cos i want that dum dum girls/ male bonding 7" this year. for a record store day it's a bit counterproductive doing a super-limited release cos those are the ones that'll hit ebay immediately. there were even shops putting stuff aside to ebay them themselves which must've rankled labels a bit.

Anyone in the area should still get down there though, last year we had loads of tasty treats, bands playing all day, a quiz and giveaways, and the atmosphere was magic!
I like that sound of that..!

I was meant to be studying/ working tomorrow, but am now tempted to forget all about that and wend my way over to Monorail.

it didn't get pressed after all, apparently. the first cribs lp (w/ demo cd) is out, though. a snip at £20.

had interestingly contrasting experiences in the two shops i hit up this morning -- got to rough trade east shortly after 9am, thinking i'd be able to stroll in -- to be faced with a still-closed shop & a huge queue: i heard the security talking, i was about the 280th person to go in. inside it was carnage. the r.s.d. records were dotted around the shop but all surrounded by huddles of people. i had two i wanted to get that i thought might be sought-after (hold steady lp -- they had 3 copies to begin with; peter gabriel/ stephin merritt 7" -- got that one) plus a couple more i knew would be easy enough (shitty limits 7", hygiene 7"). they'd sold out of the dum dum girls/male bonding 7" within 30 mins, though. ended up buying a couple more things just to make the stress feel worthwhile. stuff kept getting knocked off racks, someone had dropped a full coffee on the floor which splattered a whole bunch of paper sleeves, lines five-deep at the tills. total nightmare.

decided to try sister ray on my way home, which had an hour-long queue but a totally different system -- only about 20 people allowed in the shop at any one time & all the r.s.d. stuff behind the counter so you joined a queue around the edge of the shop & asked for the items. very civilised. fortunately they had the ddg/mb 7". rather pleasant standing chatting to fellow nerds on a sunny soho morning while the local coffee shop delivered to the queue.
