Our guest DJs this month are David and Franic of The Wave Pictures. They've DJ-ed at the club several times and always turn in an excellent set, from indiepop to rock'n'roll and back again, and I'm really looking forward to seeing what they planned for us this time around.

Admission is the usual price of £4 for members and £6 for non-members and £6 in advance. You can pick up an advance ticket here - http://www.wegottickets.com/event/221185

Indie song of the week: Well, it has to be "Hand In Glove", doesn't it, but a special mention as well for "He's Frank (Slight Return)" by The Monochrome Set, which has soundtracked the last couple of weeks for me. Released in 1978, this sounds years ahead of its time now.

Soul song of the week: An absolute killer of a soul tune this month, "My Heart Is In Danger by Alder Ray. What a tune! Can't wait to dance to this one. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qr8VczPz3Bg

Ding dong! This is Friday night in Brixton...

We're back at the Canterbury Arms in Brixton this Friday for another night of indiepop and northern soul dancing. Our guest DJs are from Unpop, Edinburgh's superb indiepop club, who'll be making their debut appearance at HDIF. The trio have DJ-ed at Indietracks and know exactly how to get a dancefloor hopping, so we're in for a grand night. Expect indiepop, indiepop and indiepop, with some extra indiepop on the side if we're lucky!

Indie song of the week: "Making Money" by Camera Obscura. The new Camera Obscura album is out today, and a lovely thing it is too. This song shimmies and shakes and wiggles its hips with a sparkle in its eye.
Soul song of the week: "Who Do You Love?" by Jo Ann & Troy. Have you heard this before? I stumbled upon it yesterday for the very first time and was blown away. It's a handclapping, footstomping, super happy version of "Who Do You Love" by Bo Diddley, a song which has some of the darkest lyrics ever. "I walk 47 miles of barbed wire/I use a cobra-snake for a necktie/I got a brand new house on the roadside/Made from rattlesnake hide." Yay, let's party! Take a listen here - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pd0JcHvby2Y

It's time for our annual Smiths special, where we play every song from one Smiths album throughout the course of the night. This year, it's the turn of the band's peerless self-titled debut album, "The Smiths". Come and dance to "This Charming Man", "What Difference Does It Make?", "Still Ill", "Hand In Glove", "Reel Around The Fountain", and more.

Plus we're very pleased to welcome guest DJs The Spook School, who'll be making their DJ-ing debut at HDIF.

As you may have read by now, there are plans afoot to turn the beloved Canterbury Arms into a block of flats. There was a public consultation for the scheme on June 27th - more info on that here: http://www.maydevelopmentsbrixton.blogspot.co.uk/ - and now the developers are going to apply for planning permission. A change of use has already been granted for the site.

We don't know how long this will all take, but the PR company linked to above said that they didn't think it would happen this year. So we have - hopefully - at least six months left at the Canterbury, including November, which is our 10th anniversary of doing HDIF at the Canterbury Arms.

It's my intention to go down with the ship. We will continue to dance and drink and have fun until the very last possible moment. Like Sid James and company at the end of "Carry On Up The Khyber", we will carry on as usual, while the rubble falls around us. Then, once the pub has finally closed, we'll think about what happens next.

So, please join us on Friday for one of the final HDIFs at the Canterbury Arms in Brixton. Our guest DJ is Bill from Allo Darlin', who has DJ-ed at HDIF at the Canterbury several times before and will be playing indiepop, Eighties pop and more.

Indie song of the week: "I Know It's Over" by The Smiths
Sixties song of the week: "The Last Time" by The Rolling Stones

Hurrah for air-conditioning!

More specifically, hurrah for the air-conditioning at The Phoenix. While London has been basking in glorious sunshine/unbearable heat, our favourite West End basement bar has been cool, calm and collected, and promises to be just the place to go dancing after another "dreaded sunny day". Keats, Yeats, Wilde and Willis Carrier (who invented the modern air con unit in 1902) are on our side.

Our guest DJs on Saturday are Tigercats. Their DJ session last year was one of our favourites of the year, and we're looking forward to them rocking the Phoenix dancefloor once again.

Just a quick reminder it's HDIF at the Canterbury Arms in Brixton this Friday. We still don't know how long we have before the pub is closed down, so we're just carrying on as usual. The decision over planning permission is expected sometime next month. But we'd thought we'd get our goodbyes in while we still can, and as a way of saying farewell to the Canterbury Arms, we've decided to do a special based on the album that was conceived there - "The Kids At The Club". We'll be playing every song from the album over the course of the night. Featuring songs by...Voxtrot! I'm From Barcelona! Irene! Saturday Looks Good To Me! Fanfarlo! Butcher Boy! Suburban Kids With Biblical Names! Lucky Soul! Pocketbooks! To mention just a few. Plus our guest DJs are Liz from The School and Tim from Belfast's Daytrip club night, who'll be playing indiepop, 60s girl groups and more.

Our guest DJ at HDIF at the Canterbury Arms in Brixton this Friday is Sean Price of Fortuna Pop records. Just over ten years ago, Sean put on a one-off night at the Canterbury Arms called Too Much Too Young and it was a fantastic night out - you could choose between having your hand stamped Too Much or Too Young on the door, Sportique played live, Amelia Fletcher DJ-ed, and a little light bulb flashed on above my head in the middle of it all.

I knew the Canterbury Arms very well of course - I used to go there to see punk bands when I first moved to London (I remember a particularly wild Snuff gig there), and I even spent the night of the riot in the mid nineties locked in the back room - but I'd never thought about having a club night there. So when I walked in and saw the room being used for a dance party, I was very very excited. HDIF at the Buffalo Bar was getting pretty popular at this point and it felt like we could add another night in another venue...and as I was a Brixton boy myself, the idea of doing a night in my hometown felt like the best thing ever.

Ten years on, and it's almost all over. We still haven't heard any more about the proposed demolition of the Canterbury Arms, but we're working on the understanding that we have until the end of the year - so that's four Brixton HDIFs left to go. As soon as Sean heard that the Canterbury Arms was due to be knocked down, he asked if he could DJ on one of the final nights, and as we wouldn't be there if it wasn't for Too Much Too Soon, we were very happy to say yes.

Our guest DJ at HDIF at The Phoenix this Saturday is Jyoti Mishra of White Town. Jyoti DJs for us every year and the world would be a very very sorry place indeed if we didn't see his smiling face and box of floorfillers at HDIF around about now. He's best known for his genuine number one smash hit, "Your Woman", of course, which in true DIY-style, he wrote and recorded in his bedroom in Derby, but he's also a top-notch DJ, playing indie pop, electro pop and more. Come out for a dance!

Indie song of the week: "I'll Be Honest" by The Spook School. Heard this yet? I played it for the first time at HDIF in Brixton a few weeks ago and it sounded magnificent and had the dancefloor bouncing with glee. I'm going to call it the Indiepop Single Of The Year until someone else has the gumption to record something better. Take a listen here - https://soundcloud.com/fortuna-pop/the- ... -be-honest
Sixties song of the week: "I'm Waiting For The Man" by the Velvet Underground. Just because sometimes the classics are really what you need.

We're back in Brixton this Friday for another night of indiepop and soul dancing. I have to say, after seeing Paul Mason's superb Culture Show special on northern soul, I've been itching to get out and play some soul classics, and it feels rather fitting that it should be at the Canterbury Arms, a pub that feels like an echo of the glory days of all-nighters and talc on the floor. If you haven't seen the Culture Show special yet, it's still on iplayer - take a look, it really is a very inspiring, heartfelt tribute to the northern scene and lifestyle by someone who clearly cares very deeply. The shots of Paul dancing to soul at the end of show really got to me.

Watch it here - http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p01gy7lp

Our guest DJ this Friday is Chris Stride of Sheffield's legendary Offbeat indie club. Chris and partner Gill DJ-ed at HDIF every year between 2005 and 2010, and we're very pleased to welcome back Chris after a three year paternity break. Offbeat was voted the best indie club in the country by BBC 6 Music back in the day, and with very good reason, so expect a set of floor-filling indie pop from one of the best indie DJs going.

10th anniversary of HDIF at the Canterbury Arms.

Ten years! Have we really spent ten whole years dancing to indiepop and northern soul in the backroom of the Canterbury Arms? You bet we have! On November 7th, 2003, we asked Amelia Fletcher of Tender Trap and Talulah Gosh fame (who just happened to live opposite the Canterbury at the time), if she'd like to be our guest DJ at a try out of HDIF in a brand new venue, and we haven't looked back since. Amelia became our unofficial guest DJ in residence at the Brixton HDIF, appearing more times than any other guest DJ, and so who else could we ask to DJ at our 10th anniversary party than Amelia? Please come and celebrate ten glorious years in Brixton at one of the final HDIFs at the Canterbury Arms.

This Saturday, we're back at The Phoenix in Cavendish Square, and we're having a Jens Lekman special. Jens was one of our highlights of this year's End Of The Road festival, and so we thought we'd celebrate by having a night playing his best songs, from "Black Cab" and "You Are The Light" to "Friday Night At The Drive-In Bingo" and "An Argument With Myself" and beyond. We'll also be playing songs he's taken inspiration from, sampled and covered - so expect to hear The Shangri-Las, Chairmen Of The Board, Television Personalities, The Left Banke and loads more.

I emailed Jens just to let him know that we were holding a night in his honour and he sent back a lovely reply. I'm sure he won't mind me repeating it here:

"Wow!
That's amazing, I'm very touched.

Now I know how it feels to be loved

Send the people my love.
J"

Our guest DJs for the night are Richard and Laura of This Many Boyfriends.

Will this be the last HDIF in Brixton? We just don't know. What we do know is that the decision to grant permission to demolish the Canterbury Arms was meant to have been made by October 31st, but the case is yet to have cropped up in any of the planning meetings. It may be made sometime in November, or December, who can tell? Unfortunately, we don't do a Brixton HDIF in January, as it's too close to New Year's Eve, so the next scheduled Brixton HDIF is in early February. Given the situation, that seems like a perilously long way away. Anything could happen in the meantime. So please come and dance while we still have a chance. This could really be it.

We're very pleased that our guests for the evening will be The Actionettes, who will be dancing and DJ-ing. The Actionettes have danced at HDIF at the Canterbury several times over the years, and they rehearse in the pub, so this is personal for them too.

Post by ian » Thu Dec 19, 2013 6:10 pm

This Saturday is the last regular HDIF of the year, and it's going to be themed roughly around Autobiography by Morrissey. I'll be playing songs mentioned in the book, from Moz's soul and 60s pop faves when he was a teenager, like Rita Pavone and The Elgins, through to the seventies icons like New York Dolls and David Bowie, right up to date with songs by The Smiths and Morrissey himself. Reading the book I was struck by how HDIF-friendly the songs he mentioned were, so I think it's going to be a perfect mix. Our guest DJ for the night is Paul Court from The Primitives, who'll be digging into his collection of vinyl girl group gems to give a suitably festive spin to the proceedings. And I'll be pitching in with our usual selection of indiepop and northern soul, and throwing in some favourites from A Christmas Gift from Phil Spector too. Hurrah!

The first HDIF of the new year is this Saturday January 18th, it's at the Phoenix, and our guest DJ is Huw Williams of The Pooh Sticks.

Oh yes, a mere nine years after his last DJ appearance at HDIF, Huw Pooh is back back back, for another super-danceable session of indiepop, 60s girl groups and more. You just have to take a look at the bands and songs namechecked in the Pooh Sticks' classic "On Tape" to get an idea of what Huw might play for us. "Falling And Laughing" by Orange Juice (the original Postcard version). "Songs For Children" by The Pastels. Sky Saxon's solo album. All the Velvet Underground records. The Monkees' "Head" soundtrack. "Be My Baby" by The Ronettes.

You want it, he's got it.

I'm talking 'bout everything.

The first HDIF of the new year is always a blast, so please come out for a dance. Admission is the usual price of £4 for members and £6 for non-members, and £6 in advance. You can pick up an advance ticket here - http://www.wegottickets.com/event/254741

We're back in Brixton this Friday for the first Brixton HDIF of the year. There's still no news on the future of the pub, so we're carrying on as usual. Our guest DJ is Bill of Allo Darlin', who has DJ-ed at the Canterbury Arms several times now and knows more than a thing or two about how to get a dancefloor hopping. The next Brixton HDIF after this is at the start of March, so come out for a dance!

Our guest DJs at HDIF at The Phoenix this Saturday are Anna and Niall of The Spook School. Last year they DJ-ed a fantastic set of super-danceable indiepop, and we're looking forward to more of the same on Saturday night.

Indie song of the week: "I'll Have To Dance With Cassie" by God Help The Girl. I haven't played this at the club for ages - years perhaps? - but reading the rave reviews of the film from the Sundance festival has set it playing in my head again. A brilliant song about dancing - dancing to write songs to dance to, as Spacemen 3 almost said. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a4O2rd1qkAo
Soul song of the week: "Comme Le Fleuve Aime Le Mer" by Tina. I played this for the first time at HDIF at Brixton the other week but it's so good it'll be getting another airing on Saturday night. It's a simple concept - a 60s French pop version of "River Deep Mountain High", but my oh my, what a version! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f6KJCZvuEQ0
