Been back to the Aleutians this week. Unalaska, anyone? It looks like it's made of sugar.

I'm a total islomaniac. Really considering going to apply for a job at the far, far, far northern Norwegian weather stations next winter at Jan Mayen, Hopen or Bjørnøya.

I so wish I'd done stuff like that when I was 18! Good luck.

God, yeah.

It sounds wonderful, Magnus. Hope it works out for you. Had a lovely hour or so going round those islands and, once you get past the Ikea beds, Hopen looks breathtaking:

Please say hello to where I'd like to be today. Mykines, in the Faroe Islands:

This is right and pretty much everything else is wrong.

So pretty! Shall we go there? The Faroe Islands are only up there, aren't they.

I'm in!
Also just discovered that helicopter fares from the airport to Mykines are 14£ or so. Now that is amazing.

That's well cheaper than Edinburgh taxis, I'll tell you that much.

Look, if you're going to give an island a name like that, how do you expect me not to be obsessed?

How to get there:
Catch a plane from wherever you are to Reykjavik, Iceland.
Then another to Ilulissat on Greenland.
Then get a ferry (the company's called Diskoline) or a helicopter ride to Disko Island.

Not so distant this time: North Brother, "an unpopulated island in the middle of New York City".

Ooh, I was reading about that the other day. It combines two of my favourite things: islands and abandoned shit.

talking about "abandoned shit" (and entitling berlin at least as an ex-island), this should appeal to you... they found a music hall somewhere in a berlin back yard last year, which was forgotten for about 80 years (and unfortunately will be rebuilt as a yuppie-scum restaurant or so)... here are some photos:

i think it's amazing.

What's that, Anorak? You want a picture of the bus shelter on Unst, the most northerly inhabited island of the UK, which has a sofa and a TV inside, is known locally as 'Bobby's Bus Shelter' after the child who wrote to the council and made them change their minds about closing it, and is maintained by the local residents and redecorated every year with a different theme or colour scheme?

Oh, alright then!

The world's all right sometimes, isn't it.

I'm a bit obsessed with Unst. I've got the job ads page on their website bookmarked and check it every so often. You never know.
