I found a great flat in St David's but he won't let me move in on the dole, so fingers crossed for my interview (central) and house viewings (one central, one St Thomas) on Friday.
Christ, I know how you feel. I'm thinking more and more seriously about moving back, but will really struggle to get a job down there. That'll learn me to choose a career in the hessian-wearing, mung bean-worshipping, loony left voluntary sector.

If I were you I'd look to live around Newtown/St. James' Park or St Leonards/Mount Radford. That's where I'd choose, anyway. I'd definitely avoid the horrible little outposts like Whipton Barton and Stoke Hill.

I moved here (well, Exmouth) two years ago, without a job and then couln't find one that suited me (and that paid well enough to pay the bills). So then I found this job in Oxfordshire, which meant I had to work away from home during the week, but it sounded nice, and would give me a lot of experience, after which I could look for local jobs. Which might be an idea (of course, mostly if "lack of experience" is what prevents you from finding a good job down here; there are some decent ones, really.)

Will you be living here by the 11th of September which is when we'll play some music at Tigga's Bar again, under the moniker of Exeter Goes Pop! which, actually, stands for "Four people in the whole of Exeter go Pop!" (Five, when Phil comes 'round.) But perhaps the problem with Exeter and Pop! is that people are just shy and spend most of their time behind their computer screens, rather than go out and make friends. I had, for instance, heard of neither Pop Noise nor Pop Annoys Simon. Will listen as soon as I'm able to!
Oooh, I might be about then. I'll check it out.

The interview went well, I find out this afternoon. Aaaagh!

For anyone down this way, please don't forget my gig at Exeter, Tiggas on Saturday...Phil Wilson (with my new band), together with National Pastime and Matthew Stead...and it's completely FREE!

Is there anybody out there?

THIS Saturday? Oh dear Phil. We're, like, here, 48 weekends out of the 52, and you have to go and pick the one we're away?!

Well that's half the potential audience gone already! Bugger.

Aw, such as shame we'll miss you Phil. I hope some people will come. Much more than the Phoenix, Tigga's bar is quite depressing when it's empty. But it's on a Saturday, so I'm sure some people will drop by.

Cheers, Martijn! It is a shame you can't make it.

With Alistair, Carrie, my wife and the other bands, I reckon that's about 13 or 14 in the audience! That will do :-)

Heh, the only time we had so many people at EGP! was when Jello Biafra was playing in the other room and his audience came and have a look during the break. :)

I'm going to be working in Exeter 17th June for two weeks. Any tips on what to do and see on my days off? Any good gigs happening around that time?

Good gigs in Exeter are very few and far between...The South West has yet to discover the joys of indie-pop. However, the people at Pop Noise records put on regular, free, gigs featuring the labels bands. Dates will be listed on their Myspace:

Otherwise, there's plenty to do - if you like the outdoors/seaside! Local trains go to Exmouth, which is a nice seaside town (and full of charity shops, if you're into that sort of thing). Local buses will take you to Dawlish Warren - which is beautiful as long as you stay clear of the chavvy end of it. You can also bus out to Dartmoor for walking. Trains and buses also go to Plymouth - the Hoe and aquarium are worth a trip there to see.

Hope you enjoy your time down here!

Nothing wrong with Exmouth --I have spent two happy years there-- and indeed every second shop is of the charity kind, but when it comes to seaside towns, I think Budleigh or Sidmouth or Dawlish are slightly more interesting. And the train ride to Dawlish and beyond is awesome. Or for a slightly more adventurous journey, you can take the train north to Barnstaple (something which we should do one day too; it is shocking how little we have seen of this county!).

As Phil says, decent gigs are a rarity, but for more general culture, your visit coincided with the Exeter Summer Fesitval; you might find something of your liking there.

Something happening in Exeter?! Strange but true....

The Fall are playing the Exeter Phoenix on Monday 29 November, and my band will be supporting them...

I really like playing with unexpected bands! So I'm really looking forward to this.

I've just moved back to Paignton (eugh). I grew up around here, but having spent the last six years in Cardiff and then Manchester, I feel like I have been utterly spoiled for brilliant indiepop nights and the such. I just want there to be ONE within the whole county, goddamnit.

Any recommendations? I'm guessing it would mean travelling to Exeter or Plymouth if at all, but I could deal with that. Or does anyone want to start a clubnight with me? Yeh? Yeh.

I'm trying to think about good things about Paignton. You'll have to give me more time ;-)

There's no regular pop night at all in Devon, as far as I am aware. Alistair Fitchett did run one in Exeter, but gave up last year due to the apathetic response!

There is a local indie label called Popnoise Records who put on small concerts farily regularly in Exeter. It's run by Simon Bish who is definitely worth getting to know! http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=800103641

The Morrisons put on the odd pop gig in Torquay and Newton Abbot. So worth getting to know them, too: http://www.myspace.com/themorrisons

Good luck!

Phil

If you were an out-of-towner planning to spend your August bank holiday weekend in sunny Salcombe (and some of the time beneath its famed wreck-littered azure waters), where would you rest you weary head?

i.e., can anyone recommend a watersports-friendly B+B, please?
