Drink combinations...

Post by Jangloid Mark » Wed Dec 09, 2009 3:07 am

I must admit, if I have a spirit, I tend to like it neat. Someone once told me that whiskey & water makes the former 'breathe'. I tried it. Ych yfu....never again...it was truly vile. (As much as I like a drop of whiskey).

Some things do work, though...so this is the place for combinations that do...suggesting combinations....and anything related....

One that I'll suggest without even trying it...I bought a 2 litre bottle of Tesco fiery ginger beer today (which I drank without any alcohol - I wanted cloudy lemonade, but, aparantly, my local Tesco is 'not allowed' to sell it - this came from the store manager).

Anyway, I had a glass of said drink, and rather liked it...and got to thinking...this would really work with whiskey...maybe even vodka (although, saying that, vodka is MEANT to be drunk neat in my opinion)....

So, the idea for this thread was born....

Would whiskey/fiery ginger beer work?
What are you favourite combinations?

Were you trying to buy fireworks again, Mark?

Thanks for the tip, Caramary....I usually get a little bottle of whiskey in when the weather turns cold - as is supposedly doing early next week....I shall try it out then :)

Try a mix of equal parts coffee liqueur and vodka, topped up with a bit of coke and a splash of guinness to take the sweetness away and make it smooth. I think it's called a Smooth Black Russian and it's flipping brilliant.

Weird, Tescos make their own brand too. Did he say why?
And by me, I mean, Flexo.

Sounds like he was a bit of a racist.

Mark, spiced rum is nice with ginger beer. Something like Sailor Jerry rum would be ideal...although the fiery type of ginger beer might block the taste of the rum a bit, and no-one wants that.

Ginger beer mixed with mild is the original shandy. Lovely pint it is.

I was in a Wetherspoons recently (if you think that's bad you should see the other pubs in the area) and discovered that on their cocktail menu that they have a cocktail known as a 'Cheeky V' which is '2x WKD Blue & port'. Err, nice.

I was in Grimsby last weekend and this fucking massive docker bloke walked up to the bar beside me and said: "Two pitchers of Cheeky V please, love."

squirrelboutique, 'lemonade' in the UK is more like sprite, so I guess cloudy lemonade in the UK is what americans call lemonade.

I guess this is the right place to post this.

A lovely little cafe near my house makes their own ginger ale. It is so yummy. The key (but surprising) ingredient is a hot pepper.

OMG it is so yum!

I made my own ginger beer once using wine yeast. Certainly did the trick (and I learnt a very valuable lesson about the tensile strength of PET bottles.)

Dark rum and ginger beer= a Dark and Stormy. Very good for hiding lesser quality supermarket rum.

I have a guilty soft spot for a 'cheeky Vimto' now and again, I love the way the headache starts before you're even halfway down it...;^)

i just had a really amazing cocktail: awamori (Okinawan sake--a bit like vodka, only made with rice), cassis and shikwasa (Okinawan lime). totally yum. I had two and they were served in beer glasses (on the small side for beer, but on the f*cking huge size for cocktails). I should be drunk, but really i'm just very very sleepy.
