I'll agree that it's been a little underwhelming this series, but to say "It's shit now" is to ignore the nature of the beast. It implies that Doctor Who *was* good and then became bad like some out of date beef. But I think even the most ardent fan would agree that Doctor Who is uniquely hit and miss. There could be an absolute stinker of an episode/series that you'd be embarrassed to watch with a none-fan but what I love about the show is that there really is *nothing* to stop the next one being incredible.

My PhD Supervisor has been blogging about the latest series for his publisher (I think it's a tie in with the new edition of his book which is due out at the end of the year). Anyway, I thought some of you Whovians might be interested.

Doctor Who

Post by Gordon » Sun May 19, 2013 12:07 pm

From the sun re the 50th anniversary special:
SpoilerShow
John, who has filmed the 3D special, revealed that he plays “part of the Doctor” in a “kind of trinity” with Matt Smith and David Tennant.
He dropped the bombshell when speaking at an event in Norfolk. It comes after show writer Steven Moffat took strict security measures to keep the plot of the one-off movie top secret.
And TV Biz can also reveal more details. His character will be a regeneration of the Doctor which he has FORGOTTEN about.
It comes after Christopher Eccleston refused to return for the episode, despite meeting with Moffat a number of times to discuss his role.
A source explained to TV Biz: “John will play the real Ninth Doctor. Christopher Eccleston has always been thought of as the Ninth Doctor but now that John has been revealed as the Ninth Doctor, it shuffles Eccleston’s Doctor to be the Tenth Time Lord, Tennant the 11th and Smith the 12th.
“It also means the Doctor’s time is running out as he can only regenerate 12 times.”
Our source continued: “Steven loves a complex plot and there will be plenty of surprises along the way.
“The reason the Doctor has forgotten his ninth incarnation will become clear but it’s to do with the Time War and his shame over his behaviour in it.

This is probably not true but if it is then it's the most exciting news I've ever heard.

It's a variation on the rumour that's been going round the internet all summer (most commonly citing either 90 eps or more specifically Marco Polo, Enemy of the World and Web of Fear). Sadly, in light of low-key comments from various members of the Restoration Team, I'm inclined to think it's utter balls.

If there's anything to it I'm guessing we'll find out around either the anniversary weekend or this year's Missing Believed Wiped. Which I will probably buy a ticket for, just in case...

Yeah I think I have heard it before and just discounted it. It would be great timing if it was true - coinciding with not just with just the 50th anniversary but also with the BBC releasing the last of the complete stories on DVD. "Oh we've got nothing else to sell the Doctor Who fans... oh look what we've just found down the back of the sofa."

Funnily enough this does seem to have moved on a bit just this afternoon, with numerous outlets picking it up. Now, this has happened a few times over the summer (not on this scale) and I've swung from scepticism to leaning towards thinking it's true to getting fed up with the whole thing... But saner online voices are now suggesting "episodes" have indeed turned up, who had remained silent up to now.

I suspect the BBC might either bring forward an announcement to earlier than they'd planned, or make a point of dismissing it all. Hopefully the former.

EDITED TO ADD: Blimey, if that Radio Times article is right, it's only bloody true! Enemy of the World and 4 eps of Web of Fear seem the hot tips. Press release on Tuesday apparently, so we'll know one way or the other then.

Looks like Ben Wheatley of Kill List etc. fame will be directing the first couple of Capaldi episodes! Should hopefully be pretty wonderful.

This may be one of the few things that convinces me watch a couple of episodes. Though I doubt Moffat will let him do anything too interesting or good.

Plus, keep in mind that Wheatley will take directing jobs for money. I reckon it'll be the bloke who did the Go Compare ads who shows up rather than the director of A Field In England.

When worlds collide... Gai Waterhouse (nee Smith), a former actress who played Presta in the 1978 Tom Baker Doctor Who story The Invasion of Time, trained the winner of Australia's biggest horserace overnight.

If anyone hasn't watched the mini-sode "Night Of The Doctor" yet I would respectfully suggest doing so IMMEDIATELY, if possible while avoiding all spoilers because HOLY HECK IT WILL BLOW YOUR TINY MIND*!!!!!!

* unless you're not really bothered about Doctor Who, in which case it might not

It's Dr Who's 50th Anniversary, so why not download this New 50th anniversary version of The Hector Collectors now-dated song about Northern Soul DJ Ian Levine's quest for missing Dr Who episodes "Quest For Web Of Fear 5", backed with an updated version "Quest For Masterplan 8". - all produced by Camera Obscura bassist Gavin Dunbar!

Ace! Is it Doctor Who o'clock yet?

I watched An Adventure In Time And Space last night and it was lovely. It's made me want to rewatch all of the William Hartnell stories.

I did think though that while they had the Marco Polo sets and cast and costumes they could have recreated it. Of all the missing First Doctor stories it's the one I want to see the most.
