The News

Post by humblebee » Thu Jan 10, 2008 15:25

I see the fortunes of Marks and Spencer were the lead story for much of BBC news again yesterday.

Why is the BBC so obsessed with M&S? If you haven't noticed this yet, and you live in the UK, listen out. You'll notice soon enough.

If you search the BBC website for Marks and Spencer you get 225 pages of hits!

I noticed that years ago! It's like there is this perception of M&S as being the quintessential British retailer and if they are not doing well (which has been the norm in the last few years), that reflects badly on the country as a whole and we should do something about it. Like go out and buy loads of cardigans and overpriced fruit to keep them afloat.

Why are you so obsessed with the BBCs obsession with Marks and Spencers? Huh? Why am I obsessing over obsession? Oh yeah I just like the word.

Joking aside I too would like to know why half the guff that gets through onto the news should be reserved for programmes like Watchdog. Did anyone see the metrs comments on Amy Winehouse and her new do? Shallow tabloid scum.

Omg you haven't seen or heard? It reminds me of the time I forgot to put the colurant in my hair dye mix and bleached my roots a nice shiny yellow. I think everyone has to go through a complete hair change at some point in their lives so I approve.

did anyone hear nicky campbellend on bbc 5 live this morning ripping into a junior defence minister because 10 british service personnel had been given blood transfusions on the frontline by us military folk while under fire... nicky's ire was raised because these helpful american soldiers could've had aids or hepititus c or glandular fever or anything and why weren't proper checks made first, scum?

to which the junior defence minister meekly replied, 'well, none of them did have bad blood and we should really be thanking them for helping our boys'

to which nicky roared back 'no but, yeh but, normally americans are killing our boys under friendly fire, so shows what you know, big nose'

a very sizey news 'content'... soldiers nearly killed by blood that wasn't bad but might have been, bloody americans, bloody blair, bloody war

what will appall nicky campbellend tomorrow??

It stands for oh my goodness. I'm not medidating at the moment but I think it would be a good idea as my furrowed forehead would make a klingon jealous.

They so do, it's weird. I've also spotted that the BBC news likes to talk about the BBC a lot too.
And by me, I mean, Flexo.

The Marks and Sparks thing was probably on the news yesterday because there was a big PwC report out yesterday about how retailers are gonna be fucked this year.

They've done a different angle on different days, just to keep M&S in the news. I love how the emphasis can change completely within the space of three days:
BBC news online wrote: M&S hit by poor Christmas sales
Marks and Spencer sees a 2.2% drop in Christmas sales, adding to signs of slower consumer spending.
9 Jan 2008

Retailers suffer after M&S slump
UK retail shares slump after poor Christmas sales from Marks & Spencer, sparking fears of a cooling economy.
9 Jan 2008

M&S 'sees Christmas sales growth'
Marks and Spencer is set to report a growth in Christmas sales despite High Street gloom, reports suggest.

The report mentioned those three things. They're probably paid by the word so they've strung it out over three different stories.

I quite like hearing how badly Markseseseses are doing.

I always wondered about that and her getting headline slots at festivals I might have enjoyed if not for that.

Doesn't that Kate Silverton occasionally model for M&S? How very convenient. It could actually be that she doesn't, but I'm sure I've seen her huge cat face on some billboard or other.

I think the reason for the BBC's obsession with M&S is that there's the view that the public see it as a very British brand, so the BBC use it as a representative of the performance of the economy as a whole, however erroneous or justified that might be. ie. isn't the economy performing well - M&S have posted record profits! Or ooh, doom and gloom - M&S have suffered a sales slump.

As long as they keep selling their magnificent meatballs in onion gravy then I don't care what else happens.
