Re: London is great

This all looks lovely. Unfortunately I can't make it this weekend because I'm dissertationing between a flying visit to Crewe to visit me poorly mam.

If you decide to go, let me know how it is!

Re: Music small talk, music big talk

There's a distinction to be made, surely, between 'young' bands and 'new' bands? A band can be fresh and new and full of people of any age. I don't really see the age thing as a huge issue. For a long while I was one of the youngest people attending London popshows, and now I'm somewhere in the midd...

Yeah, it disappointed me too. It's certainly no reflection on his other books, which are sublime.

Re: Music small talk, music big talk

Dan - thanks for coming on here and being willing to have a dialogue about this. My initial response about class wasn't directed specifically at you, although your statements were a catalyst. I hope you've been able to take it on board. I completely relate to the frustration of being surrounded by p...

Re: Music small talk, music big talk

I hate to wade in, but I just want to get the one bit that irritates me off my chest. It's the "Indiepop is also inherently middle class" bit. It's something I've heard loads of times before, bandied around as a truism. But I'm really not sure it's the case. For the record, I absolutely definitely h...

Re: Pretty stuff for the house

Do you need three like that? Our plan is to have one 50s diner type one over the kitchen table, with spotlights everywhere else.

They would look lovely en masse though.

Re: Running

Right, so. I'm running 5k in about 30 minutes, three times a week, and I'd like to build up to 10k. I was thinking I'd try and do two 5k runs on weekdays, and then on weekends start building up maybe 0.5km each week until I get to 10k. So essentially, two 'short' runs and a long run each week. Does ...

Re: what book are you reading?

I must admit, I didn't like The Marriage Plot one bit. Middlesex, on the other hand, is perfect.

I'm theoretically up for it, yeah, unless I get behind on my dissertation.

Re: Pretty stuff for the house

My friend has the Ritchie sofa, and it's so lovely and comfortable. I actually like it so much I think I'm going to copy her and get it myself, in a different colour.

Re: Pretty stuff for the house

Lyns - the English Rose stuff is definitely out of our price range too. I'm just dreaming... That said, we don't anticipate moving any time soon, if ever, which influences how we do stuff. ALOC - I used the Ikea Benno ones for years, but I've finally made the decision to box the CDs up and put them ...

Edit: Forgot to say, good luck Lyns. I hope you get your place sorted soon! We're doing our kitchen with English Rose, like this picture only yellow handles and surfaces rather than blue. http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3341/3530214225_2aaac65646.jpg And by 'doing', I mean: paying off the loan we too...

Re: Pretty stuff for the house

So we ran out of bookshelf space ages ago, but have only just taken the bold move of boxing up all our CDs and sticking them in the basement to make room for more books. I've been deliberating over what type of shelves to go with, having narrowed it down to Cado, String System, Ladderax or Vitsoe. I...
