Re: I like short songs
Good topic! There's loads of songs around the 60-90 second mark that I'm planning to play at our next club night. My favourites at the moment are:
McCarthy - Kill Kill Kill Kill
Boyracer - They're Making Money Off Of You
The Cat’s Miaow - Third Floor Fire Escape
Another Sunny Day - I’m In Love With A Girl Who Doesn’t Know I Exist

'April Come She Will' by Simon & Garfunkel. If it were even a second longer, that would be a wasted second.

Microsongs!
This is brilliant:

It's a seven-inch that plays at 45 and it's got eight tracks, so that gives you an idea how short they are.
I think the shortest one is 'Demand', which lasts 18 seconds. 'Ripped Jeans' is ace. 'Shaky Ground' is also ace, and it's the longest song at 1'57.

'Carlos and Mercedes' by The Tidy Ups is 100 seconds of perfection.
'Carrie's Song' by Tiger Trap may well be my favourite short song ever.

In terms of joyous pop hit, The Foolishness That We Create Through Love Is The Closest We Come To Greatness is a 6 minute long 2 minute pop song.

Oh man. When I saw this thread I thought "what better thread to sing the praises of Sneeze" and you've gone and beaten me to it!humblebee wrote:Microsongs!

Only 8 tracks though? The Aussie double 7" on Half a Cow had 20, and the CD reissue has 41!

Have you ever come across some Japanese experimentalists called Maher Shalal Hash Baz. I've got one of their records - Blues du Jour - a 40 minute album with 41 tracks. The longest is a whopping 4 minutes (It's a gorgeous song called Open Fields), but the rest are mostly 30 seconds to a minute and a half. The shortest is 5 seconds (I think). Its a very lovely record that sounds as though it were made by a school band, but in a good way. I quite like that if you don't like a song much, it doesn't matter because there will be another one along in (quite literally) a minute.

Re: I like short songs
Most of the songs are dead fast punky pop with big dirty guitars - almost grungey pop in places, maybe. 'Baby Asleep' is all soft and slow and mumbly and pretty though, and 'Shaky Ground' is a bit more sparse and mid-tempo (and, really, it's a totally overlooked undiscovered classic pop song, actually).Uncle Ants wrote:Nice. Evan Dando's version of Shaky Ground is lovely. I haven't heard the original, though.

Re: I like short songs
Sneeze is Tom from Smudge and Nic from, well, most Aussie bands of the early 90s, plus was a part-time Lemonhead. Which is a pretty good indication of what they sound like.
I've never heard Evan's Shaky Ground. What record's it on?

I'm not sure, I have an mp3 floating around my hard drive from places unknown. I think it might be a bonus track on the reissue of It's a Shame About Ray?

Oooh...I'd forgotten about that little gem!!! Slightly grunge lo-fi POP!!!! An excellent EP, even if the pressing was shit...humblebee wrote:Microsongs!

My memory may be a bit hazy, but, wasn't Sneeze a Lemonheads offshoot?
