I did the same with the Beatles question, and only put 2 answers instead of 4, although i would have had to have guessed at 4 songs instead of 2 had i read it right.
and that snare drum, that drum roll
means we've got a winner

I guessed you'd done that but, in the spirit of generosity that distinguishes Christmas from other, harsher times of year, I gave you half a mark because one of them was right.

Davo - you can still guess if you want to.

Bouncing Bing Crosby

13. These lyrics come from a 1980's Christmas mega-hit. Can you name it?
Quote:
Once bitten and twice shy

Do you recognize me?
Well,

A buoyant twelve and a half, Michael!

OK, I'm assuming we're all done? Answers then:
SpoilerShow
1. 'Fairytale of New York', which reached number 2 in that year. Here's Shane and Kirsty looking festive:

Image

2. 'Snowball'

Image

3. 1963:
No. 1. - 'I Wanna Hold Your Hand'
No. 2. - 'She Loves You'

1967:
No. 1. - 'Hello Goodbye'
No. 2. - 'Magical Mystery Tour' EP, a beautiful record.

Image

4. Paul McCartney, but not 'Wonderful Christmas Time"...

5. Arab Strap. Here's Malcolm with Aidan…

Image

…and here he is on his own, being Christmassy:

Image

6. Jona Lewie. All together now…

7. The Housemartins. This is a great performance and, if you look closely, you can see Paul Heaton's acne:

*sniffle*

(mutters) Stupid claymation video...

8. c) A cocktail bar (as she sings at 1.34). I've always wanted it to be a Harvester Inn though. And it does scan.

9. a) 'Me and the Major'

(From 2.37) - "…and the snow is falling, falling, falling, falling…."

Image

10. Shonen Knife! From the cover of the US version of 'Space Christmas' (I had the UK one, but the sleeve's a bit dull and unchristmassy)

Image

11. 'Always On My Mind'. Those top ten cover versions of all time in full, as voted for by YOU, the public:
Pet Shop Boys - Always On My Mind
Johnny Cash - Hurt
The Stranglers - Walk On By
Jimi Hendrix - All Along The Watchtower
Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah
Soft Cell - Tainted Love
Joe Cocker - With A Little Help From My Friends
Sinead O'Connor - Nothing Compares 2 U
Muse - Feeling Good
Whitney Houston - I Will Always Love You
Muse? Really?

12. Bing Crosby.

13. 'Last Christmas' by Wham. I love the sleeve for this!

Image

14. Rage Against The Machine

15. a) 'Leaving Christmas Day'

b) 'Will You Please Spend New Year's with Me' (this was clearly the curveball in this question)

c) 'No Christmas'

d) ''Christmas Is Cancelled'

Crystalball wins with 15 points and is Anorak Christmas Quiz Champion!

Image

I love that little kid in the front.

Thanks to everyone who took part, I've enjoyed doing this.

And finally, a Merry Christmas to Anoraks everywhere!

This one is different, and possibly very easy/difficult. Name the band and song. One point for each correct band, one point for each correct song.

You should know by now that they're never easy but I can't stand to see them go unanswered, I know how soul-destroying it is from the other end*. I think I got six, there's not really any room for guessing.
SpoilerShow
1. Allo Darlin' - 'My Heart Is A Drummer'
6. The Housemartins - 'Happy Hour'
10. The Spook School - 'I'll Be Honest'
Out of curiosity, how'd you do on the Christmas quiz?

*Perhaps soul-destroying is a bit much. Not far off though.

Edit - further to my foolish assertion that there could surely be no guesses, I thought I might know no. 2, but lacked the confidence to put it down. Sure enough, I checked and was right but have forfeited the points. I HAVE LET MYSELF DOWN.

Thanks for doing this! It's now Monday so you're legit.

My meagre response:
SpoilerShow
5. Peter Gabriel - Sledgehammer
6. The Housemartins - Happy Hour
9. Kylie Minogue - Arggh, I know this but I now can't get the frigging Spook School out of my head.
10. The Spook School - The 'but are you who you think you are?' song. Forgot the exact title (I am 98 and still have all my own teeth).

Six points (indeed) for andyiong. I wasn't around for the Christmas quiz - holidays in the USA. It was one of the more popular ones though, wasn't it? I have already seen the answers afterwards without really trying hard. Sorry! It's not so much 'soul destroying' if nobody answers the questions, but I agree that some of the quizes have been a lot of work if nobody replies (not so much this one though). Thanks!

Four points for Michael Quentin. I considered giving half a point for the last one, but then I realised that the words you mention are not really part of the lyric, I think!

Yeah, I think I managed to make it easy for once, but I'm not sure how I did it. It would help a lot if I could figure it out. Christmas goodwill probably played a part as well.

Perhaps I go a bit far (well, yes, definitely), but I do find it a bit embarrassing if I check back after three hours and no-one's done it. I've pictured myself at the end of (as yet mercifully non-existent) answerless days before: "No, really, I didn't actually want anyone to answer my quiz, this was how I planned it all along! No, really, it's fine.": )

This will be hilariously poor:
SpoilerShow
1. Allo Darlin. That one that "borrows" the chorus from "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun". Forgotten what it's called

2. Is that Grimes? I think it is. I'll go with "Oblivion"

3. Nirvana - "Heart Shaped Box"

4. Nope

5. Peter Gabriel - "Sledgehammer"

6. Housemartins - "Happy Hour"

7. Is that "Now It's On" by Grandaddy? It isn't is it.

8. Blind Melon. I'll guess at "No Rain" because it's the only song of theirs I can remember

9. Kylie Minogue - "Can't Get You Out of My Head"

10. Spook School - "I'll Be Honest"
Maybe not as bad as I thought. We shall see.

I only knew No 6 so I haven't bothered submitting any answers.

To my further shame, did anybody else stick their headphones in and unmute their work computer because they thought the images were videos? No, just me then.
