DIY Record Labels - A List

Post by Trev » Wed Nov 06, 2013 14:21

Hello!

Just wanted to collect a list of all current and active DIYPOP record labels (they don't have to be UK based) that people are aware of and like. They don't need to be indiepop or whatever - but they do they need to be loosely concerned with POP records (not metal records, or whatever). Thought this would be a good thing to 'source' from people that love records and record labels

A name, website and a favourite release would be handy:

E.g.

Fortuna Pop / http://www.fortunapop.com / The Spook School

So let's make that entry number 1. Every week (or every few hours as I'm currently doing!) or so I will collate the list (if indeed there is anything to collate) into one handy list in this first post.

(Why am I doing this? Mainly because I am interested in it but I am also doing some research about a DIY record shop/distro kinda thing and this will obviously alert me to labels I've missed or overlooked).
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
Current List can now be found here:

Thanks Dennis. That's exactly what I was looking for. Hopefully it will throw up some new names and become a fairly comprehensive list. I've got a load more to add this evening (when I'm not in work).

i guess it comes down to personal definitions to some extent but it seems to me that there are a number of non-diy indie labels on this list. labels who use press people, mainstream indie distributors etc. this is not to criticise choices made in how to operate at whatever level or make things more financially viable, but is it really diy?

Yeah, I know. Indeed a matter of definitions. I was going for labels that release bands that make DIY pop.

I'm more thinking about labels that do small runs etc. But yeah, I know what you mean. If you're happy to classify something as DIY that's fine. This is more about collecting a list of labels (mainly DIY ones or occassionally larger indies) that release stuff that we like.

I don't really (at this point) want to get bogged down on what makes something DIY. I am sure the bigger labels listed are run pretty much by 1 or 2 people in their spare time (some could be somewhat more full time than that, though).

So yeah, that didn't help at all, did it?

i'll back off because i think all i have to contribute is spanners in the works (and also because obviously being a diy label =/= being a good label).

a strong case could be made that the truest diy is self-releasing, though.

Agreed DIY doesn't always mean good - hence the caveat around labels we like. Self releasing is probably the truest form of DIY too.

I don't mind spanners in the works, though. Debate is a healthy thing - I'm just thinking that the thread for debating what makes a DIY label is probably a sister thread to this one and not this one itself.

My friends run Rekordmeister Music which puts stuff out intermittently. Usually CD-Rs but occasionally put their name to a vinyl release. I'll let you be the judge of whether they fall within the scope of this list or not!
