Jens Lekman sampled that at somepoint before I knew about the Ennio Morricane song and thought it was a stand alone theme tune. I couldn't get my head around it.

This theme always gets me revved up! ALWAYS!

The man(Mike Post) behind this, and a few others already mentioned is a tv theme genius:

Hey, I said that too!
*high fives*

It is particularly awesome how the Rockford Files theme manages to get that wibbly mono synth bit in, and then that back-alley harmonica, and then a ripping axe solo, and there's not even 40 seconds on the clock.

I love it, just generally, when you listen to a TV theme on Youtube or a TV themes compilation album and the track turns out to have a whole bridge or something with a mad wig-out guitar bit or a sax solo that you never heard on the telly cos it would be too long for the credits. It's like you're being let into a secret. A FUNKY SECRET.

I used to have a tape with a load of BBC Sport themes on, and the theme from Sportsnight did that. I never looked at Frank Bough in the same way again, which turned out to be correct.

Mike Post is to the US telly theme tune as Ronnie Hazlehurst is to the UK.

Gods.

Plenty of theme tunes not mentioned yet that formed part of... actually, let's cut to the chase - that mostly scared the plop out of me when I was ickle.

The scariest 10 seconds ever (preceded by the old Tyne Tees ident by way of a sweetener):

Ron Geesin terrifying infant learners of maths (first minute only, after which the programme gets back to the more sundry business of trying to asphyxiate Fred Harris):

Ron Geesin doing jolly, but still probably terrifying infant learners of maths (first 50 seconds only, after which an exercise which surely inspired Tubbs Tattsyrup. "Twelvety, Edward!!"):

The scariest thing EVER written entirely in major chords. Alan Rothwell could smile as genially as he liked - too late by then. Traumatic.

And finally for now, a Lloyd Webber-written tinglefest to accompany a Tom Baker-fronted reading programme:

Shudder...

...And from the creepiest, to the BEST.

The full-length version of the wonderful theme to the long-running, Professor Heinz Wolff-fronted boffinfest. Stretching things too much to say this wouldn't have sat uncomfortably on any of Brian Eno's more song-based 1970s albums?

Whatever. Love it to death either way.

You want scary? Try Children Of The Stones:

It gave the seven year old me nightmares well into my teens. I thought I'd never be free. I only managed to watch two or three episodes too.

You have been warned!

JC's clips led me to a link to Jigsaw and a frankly outstanding Janet Ellis in a bottle green dress. I'm good for nothing now.
