whatever happened to...?

Post by indiansummer » Thu May 30, 2013 14:43

a thread for those bands you loved that just seemed to evaporate

ahem, i'll go first:

anyone remember Citizens Here & Abroad? they were a very lovely quartet from That America who played sorta Death Cab-ish, Delgados-y, Yo La Tengo-type pop.

they came over in 2005 (and again in 2006, i think, but i missed them). Flamingo 50 played with them at The Phoenix in Manchester, along with a great Pretty Girls Make Graves-ish band called Grayson's Hour and two bands that i don't recall so well. Molia Falls and Day For Airstrikes, according to Google. My bass was playing up at the time so i borrowed one from Town Bike Jane, which turned out to be incapable of staying in tune. For some reason i also remember that i was reading David Bowman's batshit Talking Heads biog on the way, but that's not really important. i bought a t-shirt, but i'm a bit too fat for it at the moment.

ANYWAY.

CHAB released two albums - the rather ace Ghosts Of Tables And Chairs and a follow-up entitled Waving, Not Drowning, which i've still not heard. they managed to get a song on the soundtrack to The OC, which i remember being inexplicably excited by at the time

then they just disappeared. Wikipedia and their own website reveal nothing

anyone know more? i'd love to know what became of 'em. they were great

No time for a ramble.

But BOX ELDERS from the USA fit this category for me. 1 cracking LP, a few singles, couple of UK dates back in 2009 or 2010 - and nothing since.

Edit - aw their wiki page says they began an indefinite hiatus in 2010....

A band who fit this category for me would be Party of One, from America, perhaps North-West-ish(?), who released a lone album "Caught the Blast" on FatCat in about, ooh, 2002, 2003-ish?

It's... well actually it's kind of rambling and all over the place, but it's got a handful of really great, attention-grabbing songs that I still listen to to this day, all pointedly dealing with subjects that you're *not supposed to write pop songs about* (the holocaust, suicide, African genocide etc.), but doing so with just the right balance of disgust, insight and black humour to really make it work, combined with a kind of scratchy, enraged lo-fi sound that really hits the spot.

They toured the UK briefly on the back of the album release, and I remember seeing them in Leicester, third on the bill or something at some gig where they went down lead balloon style (they seemed very nervous, played a lot of willfully unfriendly funk jams etc), but since then.... nothing.

I guess maybe they just thought "fuck it" when their album didn't generate much interest, but the main songwriter/singer/guitarist guy seemed to have pretty unique approach and a lot on his mind, so I'm surprised we haven't heard more from him in some context...

Lucky Soul. I never heard anything about them splitting up, they just seemed to vanish.

The singer had a baby but I believe they are working on new stuff at the moment.

A while ago I tweeted "whatever happened to Mexican Kids At Home?" If anyone replied with an authoritative answer, I don't remember and I'm still left wondering.

They're a band I associate in my head with the Deirdres because they were around at the same time and came from the same county and were all young and that. But where as the rise and fall of the Deirdres will be written in the indiepop history books, MKAH just quietly snuck away one night without letting a grown-up know where they were going.

I want to know what happened to Blind Terry. They released a really nice EP on Cloudberry, then they were touring and were big in Germany or something, then there were rumors of an album and then... nothing.

I think they just dissipated when they stopped being kids.

Robyn lives and works near me (as do three former Deirdres - it's like a Nu-Derbyshire retirement village round these parts). She writes and performs her own songs now - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8jwOqvO9o_0 However, she told me the other night that she's wanting to get a new band together.

Neat. I hope she's able to find someone who can play a mean box.

After some quick googling just now, it turns out Jack out of MKAH is in Best Friends (from the Art Is Hard stable).

Betty And The Werewolves split up because they moved to different parts of the country. Real shame, I loved them.
