that sounds so dismissive! this was the first record that actually made me FEEL something that wasn't just "this is a cool song to dance to! it's catchy and fun!" it's the first time i felt like someone was singing about things that i could relate to and cared about, especially things about race/ism. what a fucking cliched way of putting it but i don't really care.

Oh I'm sorry, it wasn't supposed to sound dismissive. It's an amazing album.

sorry, i think i read it that way because some people kind of dismiss them because of flavor flav and his slight tendency to be a bit insane (which i like!)

i'm seeing them tomorrow night. i kind of can't believe it.

Are they playing that whole album in London, too?

i'm so excited!

I saw Public Enemy at Reading in 1990 (or was it 1991). I loved that album, but I was a bit disappointed, to be honest. Maybe they didn't suit the free love and New Model Army t-shirt valhalla that was the Reading Festival that year.

I remember on the Sunday night I was that fed up that I was stood watching The Sisters of Mercy wearing my girlfriend's ex-boyfriend's leather jacket, a pair of 1985-86 season Grimsby Town shorts, and Doc Martens.

Even New Model Army fans were laughing at me.

were you bare-chested under that leather jacket?

flecks of mud up your shins?

a sheen of sweat on your brow?

they weren't laughing at you, sam, they were whooping with excitement as they came in their pants

I probably had a Boo Radleys t-shirt on. That would've dampened their amour.

The guitar solo in the middle of Neil Jung by Teenage Fanclub. I love the Fannies anyway, but there is something about that solo, that makes me hair stand up like static.

If it was '91 there's you and I at the same bloody gig again! Just think, we may have stepped in each others feces in the overflowing bogs.

Speaking of TFC, pretty much all of "Every Picture I Paint" makes me shiver. It's just the most perfect song and my absolute favorite of theirs, but what's most shivery is unusual for me, cuz it's vocal--the chorus. It's just so raw and grrr and pretty all at the same time. I used to sing this in my head whenever I'd see my then-boyfriend in Leeds--when we'd just gotten together and I felt all swoony about him--crossing campus. There's no youtube of EPIP that I can find so these words are a bit meaningless cuz it's really just the perfection of the slightly too fast and slurry delivery and the organ punctuations that make it for me. I love that whole fucking album to bits.

You're very presence turns me dear
It takes a hundred thousand colors to paint you
And every picture that I paint doesn't capture you

I'm an absolute sucker for when someone hits a high note in a song. The ones that have (repeatedly) got me today are in 'Leslie' by King Creosote and 'Will the Night' by Low. Two rainy day songs if ever I heard them.

That is one beautiful superchunktastic hop-a-long! The feedback is awesome. I'm so sad I never saw them live. More feedback live!
