shit that totally makes you shiver

Post by gloom button » Tue Nov 27, 2007 16:39

At that bit near the end of Magnolia Electric Co's Farewell Transmission when
he keeps shouting "this is a farewell transmission... listen!" I get that brilliant
terrifying feeling of hairs standing on end and like a rush of cold.
It's sort of great when you feel like that, isn't it. I think sometimes, when it's been
a while, that it might not happen again.

Friday Afternoons by The Just Joans. I have to turn lights down low and gaze out of dark windows when I hear that song

This sounds well sad, but last Saturday I found a copy of Ned Atomic Dustbin's Ingredients ep. It's got 'Grey Cell Green' on it. I lost my copy years ago, and when I played it I shivered so much I nearly pissed myself.

Shurrup.

even though it is disrespect to the rest of the song, which is great, i have been known to expressly rewind back toward the final portion of fists up by the blow, the it was perfect you know with just one little problem ... bit. it's SO AMAZING, and it's, you know, emotionally affecting. that's some fine shiverin' music.

I love the intro bit to 'The York Song' by The Orchids - how the singing starts from a backing vocal that sounds like it's the end of something. I am not explaining this very well but it's so beautiful. Sigh.

two things which always get me:

1. the whole of 'balloonist over spain' by hms ginafore, and
2. the whole of 'stabbs' by hms ginafore, but especially the bit near the start where she sings "moved into a house with three friends of mine/didn't know if it would work out, but it turned out fine/we all get up at different times so there's no queue for the shower/and we made it through the winter on love and peanut butter power".

YES! I couldn't agree more with that, and the little organ and guitar melody after that really caps it off nicely.

One that's playing on my mind (in a good way) is the crash cymbal during the chorus of 'My Home Is The Sea' by Bonnie Prince Billy (on his Superwolf album). I love a well-placed cymbal.

The other bit of that same song that gets me every time is the harmonies where they whisper/sing 'i know nothing and i'm overjoyed'. I fucking love that.

There's a bit of TWP's "What Did Your Last Servant Die Of?" It doesn't make me shiver but it gives me that holy epiphany thrills-me-to-the gills feeling; the bass solo ---> jangly melodic ---> wanking guitar 20-second interlude (starting 2:05 in) that builds up and releases into the final earnest chorus of "after all that I have done for you..."

I burst.

'Let It Ride' with Ryan Adams & The Cardinals is completely magical to me. The chorus

Let it ride
Let it ride
Easy down the road
Let it ride
Let it take away all of this darkness
Let it rock me into the arms of strangers
Angels
Until it brings me home
Let it ride
Let it roll
Let it go

Fills me with the most peaceful shivery feeling ever. It just kills me every time, I think it has a lot to do with the arrangement and rhythm of the song. I think it's in my top ten favourite songs category anyway. This much slower version with just Ryan and Neal Casal makes my legs go super goosebumpy too, even if it's not as good as the fast album version:
clear eyes full hearts can't lose

In 'Fruition' by Stereolab, there's this kind of collapsing kind of bit after the vocal parts before the bubbly final kind of note and that always just stops time for me. The whole song is amazing but that nails it.

Oh, and:

"I find myself searching for old selves
While speeding forward through the plate glass of maturing cells
"

That and the whole rest of that song.

Yesterday I was walking along my street listening to this on headphones and didn't realise that I was singing it out loud until I noticed a neighbour staring at me like I was singing to myself and was insane. Oops. So great.

Mark Robinson's "Rewind, Welcome Back". It starts with the guitar and then there's this pause that's just a bit too long (but perfectly too long) before he starts singing. Every time, shivers.

this might not be the most appropriate thread for this, but i put on 'it takes a nation of millions to hold us back' and i totally got super emotional and shivery and teary-eyed. i'm not really sure why. it's probably been almost 20 years since i listened to it in its entirety but i got THAT feeling. i can't really explain it, but i felt it the first time i heard this record and i'm kind of amazed that it still makes me feel like that.
