I like a bit of metal.
I really like At The Gates:

That song is well boss.

And I've been secretly checking out Asking Alexandria too:

There's something about that fast double kick drum sound that makes me want raise my fists in the air.

I'm massively into iron and lead at the moment. My zinc phase is over for now though. Iron and lead are the new daddies.

I like metal!

Doom, grind, black, death - it's all good.

All purpose "we-don-t-give-a-fuck-what-subgenre-this-is-it's-just-METAL" metal is perhaps the best kind of metal though.

Yeah, no clue on sub genres - but you can't beat a bit of metal. Shame my 'metal' DJing was knobbled by my laptop not wanting to play ball last Friday.....
not really here

I remember when it was all metal, when big puffy none more white hi-top trainers were quite the thing and no greasy spotty top lip was complete without a very incomplete subpar attempt at a 'tache

it always saddened me how metallers seemed to vanish in the nineties- did they all end up going to raves or something? metallers seemed to disappear at least until their kid brothers came along some years later looking like funky hairdressers with piercings and tats and that... I miss the days of big bubble headed curly locked mouthbreathers who looked thick as shit but were actually maths or physics genii who just happened to like banging their heads of a weekend and wearing denim waistcoats with words and chains and badges on

all metallers, so it seemed, were big soft lovely folk unlike jazz funkin' casuals who were all, so it seemed, massive racist tooled up wankers in capris- the irony of one group who listened to loud, aggressive apparently very white music being lovely and the other who listened to smooth, classy lurrrrrve 'urban' music being mostly redneck nutters was obvious to many irony fans, like me, in the eighties (who also went in for applied sweeping generalisations)

hayley's more expertly into metal than me but it was a big part of my growing up (mostly due to my brother, mates at school, mates at school's brothers) that means I've nothing but fondness and fascination for it

how patronising of me

*makes a devil hand*

Yes, the incongruous nice-ness of metallers is something I was discussing with a few people the other week...

I think there's a fairly common misconception amongst people who don't follow metal that metal songs (and by extention metal bands) exist to praise their grotesque and violent subject matter, when really they're more just sort of... about it (a tradition that goes right back to Black Sabbath). Eg, when naming their band, Napalm Death were not signalling their support for napalm death, and Pigdestroyer are very much opposed to the destruction of pigs.

At the same time though, Celtic Frost are ALL ABOUT winter walking holidays in Ireland and Scotland, so it can be a tough one to call, etc.

You know, I always pride myself to be pretty openminded in music, and I really listen to everything, but somehow I can't seem to find any affinity with metal. I have about 3000 records in my collections, and although I got a bunch of 80s hard rock (that s pretty fun when you are in the mood) I only got about 3 or 4 records that can be listed within the metal branches.

The reasons might be:
- I don't feel attracted by the aesthetics of most of the metal: lyrics, metaphors, band names, the whole concept most of the time it really turns me off.
- Metal is always advertised as the most energetic and powerful form of rock, even though my idea of power in music is kinda different: Sure metal sounds really loud and all, but the musicians behind bads have often amazing skills and their compositions are very well studied. I am a lot more interested in spontaneity, even when the band lacks of technique:
In terms of intensity, I would put any Black Flag, The Stooges, Adolescents record before any heavy metal band...just my personal taste
- Most metal fans I know are pretty absolutists about their music opinions: pretty hard to make them listen to something else (except jazz or classical if they like prog metal ahah) with an open mind. Don't wanna insult or stereotype here, just most of the "hardcore" metal fans I know just are like that.

Despite that, there are a few records I really enjoy, for example, Dream Theater's Metropolis PT II is kinda cool, and Motorhead is legendary to me, although in my book that is not really a metal band...just a fast and bad ass hard rock bunch eheh

I love these:

And stuff like Sunn O))), and Black Sabbath obviously.. some stuff like Groundhogs that's on the cusp of metal and blues rock, see also Flower Travellin' Band. I guess those last two are more psychedelic rock generally, which I have a lot of time for.

I don't own that much 'metal' though, and certainly the most obvious 'heavy metal' stuff is generally outside my tastes.

I appear to be getting into black metal. Wolves In The Throne Room are awesome. They're massive environmentalists who live in a commune in Washington state:

I ask people if they want to form a black metal band with me and they think I'm joking :(

indietracks connection: a member of one band who played last year was sporting a 'wolves in the throne room' t-shirt on the outdoor stage and snorks had a wee conversation about the band with this person after, mostly with them both saying 'they is so awesome', 'yeh, awesome'

how can anyone not love a band that hopes that their fans respond to the band's music by lying down on the floor and crying?

Never been much of a metal fan but I like Primus, Faith No More and weird stuff like that. Not that i'd consider either of those bands metal but they're always in the metal section in record stores. Stump sound almost exactly like Primus and Mr. Bungle but you'd never see them in the metal section in a million years, no sireee. Genres are a funny thing.

As a teenager, I was all about Metal. Although I belonged to the dark side (Death, Thrash, Black, Grindcore). I will always thank Metal because it thought me the importance of record labels (specially small ones), first edition releases, and encouraged me to search for better, more underground bands, which eventually lead me to an extensive collection of music from all kinds. I'll try to remember some names from those years and I'll make a thread with some personal recommendations.

Meanwhile, Here are some bands I thought of real quick.

(This one is with MONSIEUR FROST from Satyricon, the fastest, most powerful drummer on earth)

DOOM, evil doom...

Finnish Death Metal; The darkest, coldest of them all.

And last but not least, on of my top 5 of Swedish Death Metal, 1993, THAT was the year.

Hope someone will enjoy this as I did haha
