Yes! Makes me wish I'd seen them play live - why should I be so young? Ahem. Anyway, here is a great version of my favourite Housemartins song. It's got trains and everything:

You'll have to join the Cat's Miaow cult over there. I know some of them watch that video about 10 times a day. (It's beautiful!)

My heart stops when I watch this:

Jon Spencer was the first person on Later to jump onto Jools' piano (NB. him out of The Darkness did it about three months later and the press collectively creamed itself at the cheek of it) This Australian live TV studio provided far more for him to work with:

So heres the deal. In the mid 80s, as a morose teenage Smiths fan and so on who didn't get any action (yeah, thanks Morrissey) I used to go and visit my elderly grandad (born in 1898). He was a top fella. I couldn't help notice one day that he appeared to have a cassette of The Crossing by Big Country. He was enormously enthuisastic about it, thinking it wonderfully excellent. He was an massive bagpipe fan I might add, so clearly enjoyed the guitar bagpipe thang the post-Skids Adamson mastered.

I prattle. I listened to The Crossing earlier. It was good.

To the point, the video encapsulates the 80s brilliantly.

I still hate bagpipes mind. And white socks.
My apple pies go off today.

Videos of gigs you were at pt.376 - Kitchens Of Distinction at the Reading Festival in 1994.

If you're really lucky, I'll tell you my anecdote from that weekend about standing behind a crusty woman in the queue at a water pipe who proceeded to strip off and wash herself. It was an enduring image...

How great are Yo La Tengo? Very great it seems.

And by me, I mean, Flexo.

It's deadly when you're being nostalgic about bands and realise that there might be something by them on youtube and then there is. I was thinking about this band Watercress I used to go see and how much fun they were and then there were these two videos. Watercress were just fantastic I reckon. This one makes me think a little wistfully of the time when I used to listen to things and not have a fleeting worry that maybe putting a didgeridoo in a song was a bit.. something but just that it sounded brilliant. Which is still what I end up thinking, but I'd prefer not having that fleeting thought, I think. I was always a bit in awe of the chorus; I never quite expect the melody to go that way.

And this one is such a great bit of writing that sounds maybe more simple than it is, or than it might be. The little mandolin/strings bit is very sad, somehow.

I very much like how liberal they are with words. If memory won't rhyme with temporary, just say memorary instead.
the trouble with personalities, they're too wrapped up in style
it's too personal; they're in love with their own guile
