There's a track I've not thought about for a long time. It was a staple of primary school discos. Took me right back (as in doing Shakin' Stevens dancing with Clare Walker while my friends did knee-skidding on the parquet floor).

I bought my first few punk records on Saturday 5th November 1977 with money I'd been given for my 12th birthday a few days before. I dunno why I remember dates like that, I just do. Anyway, my Mum apparently had a few misgivings about this and mentioned them to Anne, the next door neighbour, who obviously mentioned it to her husband, Tony. Tony was, at that time, the manager at the Top Rank Suite in Brighton and from then on proceded every so often to pass records on to me that had been sent to the venue as promos and stuff.

The very first one was 'Mental Notes' by Split Enz from New Zealand and Australia. I was quite scared about listening to it because the band looked so weird in the big photo inside the gatefold sleeve, and there was a vaguely disturbing painting of a very pink, new-born baby crying on the back cover.

When I did stick it on the record player it definitely wasn't punk; I didn't know what it was. With hindsight it was the sound of a band equally enamoured with semi-prog Genesis as they were with The Beatles. I bloody loved it.

This was one of my favourite songs from it. You can see how a 12 year old might have been a tad wary of the band; the Thunderbirds-alike drummer, the unmoving expression on the strangely jerky bass player, the keyboardist's haircut, the two blokes with the big, mad hair swaying in time together. I still bloody love it.

Tony went on to give me other records too, but none which had the same impact. The one I really wanted was Buzzcocks's 'Love Bites', fully autographed by the band apparently, but because there was loads of trouble at the gig with most of the band's gear being stolen, the management company demanded he gave it back at the end of the night.
I later worked with a girl who was at that gig and she told me it was equally scary and bizarre, and the last thing she saw as she left the venue was the bass drum with the Buzzcocks logo on being rolled and kicked down the road to the beach.

I saw a poster for Split Enz, with a sillhouette of their idiosyncratic hairstyles, advertising a gig in Portsmouth some time in 1979. I thought about running away for the night to attend, but being 13 I guessed that even if I did make it the 50 miles down the coast, they'd never let me in. Sadly, that's the closest I ever got to seeing them when they were still good (or at any other stage come to that).

Sorry for the waffle, I just felt like typing tonight.

I'm posting this all over the internet wherever I can

I first heard the song done by cibo matto and that was lovely but this is sublime

there's a slight jump cut toward the end where the camera pans in on a microphone and then it pans back and elis regina has a fag on the go and although of course it's bad for your 'elf it's still spectacularly cool and tom jobim rocks a mean pullover (there's another clip of the same song where he sports a mean cardy and has a go on a flute), he's probably the coolest person I've ever seen

and that voice!

oy!

Aw, that's so great. Between this and the j-pop glowiness humblebee posted on another thread, I'm happy again.

Did I ever post this here?

How nice to see a video for a song I've long liked. I really like her style here! It's ace and almost makes me want to wear trousers again.

Her guitar is also very unusual and quite vintage looking. Anyone have an idea of what make it is?

Someone let Mark E Smith onto Top Of The Pops:

I like how nobody can think of anything to say about it, before, after or in the caption. But oh, the controversy it caused:
