Really great videos by bands you like

Post by let it ride » Thu Oct 16, 2008 14:28

Sam's thread made me think about the videos that make me cringe, but also the ones that make me so utterly happy that a song can be perfectly matched in a good video. It's a hard thing to do, and I often find them quite silly.

Ryan Adams - New York, New York.
Shot in front of the Twin Towers four days before 9/11 made it kind of a New York love anthem and it just seems really, really powerful shot like that. Makes me feel very emotional.
On a sidenote: Damn it was good Ryan laid off the drugs and alcohol, he looks so much better these days.

This might be the most inspiring music video to me ever. In terms of playing music, conveying the emotion while keeping the uber structured feel of the song... the filming is just damn perfect, and the editing is nothing less than spectacular. The colours and lighting make me go nuts, it is just amazing.

As a weird add-on, this video kind of dictated by fashion youth, when I only took inspiration from boys. The duct taped Converse shoes, the foxy man's watch (still looking for that perfect one) and the slightly too short sleeves and trouser hems, the statements socks, the sleeve/jacket combo (I work that look all the time) and just the movement. It's my style porn! Love it.

i've never seen the video to pillar of salt by the thermals before, it's utterly brilliant and everything a fairly cheap video should be. how much fun does it look like being in the thermals? very much fun is the answer. and the fun never veers into any kind of overly zany antics, which would be unforgivable. is that colin meloy in there? plus i can watch it at work which gives it nine extra thumbs up. here it is, it's probably on myspace as well.

i think Colin Meloy's in it - Ben Gibbard is too, i think...?

The video for How We Know is pretty good too. I love how excited Hutch always looks.

if i was in a band play uptempo lo-fi rock-punk i'd totally have a big fringe and bounce up and down on the spot with a big grin on my face.

No Pocky For Kitty really is the blueprint for that band. But what a blueprint! And what a band!

I have now imagined a spot with a big grin. Thank you.

Correct on both accounts.

Never get tired of this song. I wish I heard this when I was 16, then it'd be more socially acceptable to bounce around on my bed doing crazy air guitar to it. Obviously, I've done no such thing as of yet.

Does anyone else like Black Flag? Yes? Good. This interview is hilarious. It's quite hard to reconcile the mid-20s lunatic Henry Rollins with the his current 'seems-like-a-thoroughly-nice-guy' persona... i guess he mellowed as he got older.

I especially enjoy the way Bill Stevenson answers the charge that Flag have sold out.

I may be the only half japanese fan here but I'll keep posting all the same

this is they doing 'you're gonna miss me' in a rambunctious manner last year

I really hope I grow up to be david fair and get up on stage and dance, sing and hold my pants up- it looks more fun than whatever the alternative might be (job, mortgage, golf)

That is good actually.

If you watched that with the sound off, you could be forgiven for thinking that Steve Albini was the singer and Leo Johnson offa Twin Peaks was the guitarist.

Animals That Swim were such a great band. I never understood why they weren't bigger.

Anyway, here's Faded Glamour:

I will resist the temptation to post those Zombies videos from the French TV show and the Eux Autres "Other Girls" performance for the 4th-5th time.
