I've just remembered a brilliant one from Cambridgeshire - Fen Boy Three.

I'm sure I've mentioned this before, but there used to be this dwarf fella who covered Paul Weller songs in Nottingham. He called himself Small Weller.

you have, but surely that belongs in 'brilliant tribute band names'? i'm sure there was another one that someone suggested should appear on double bills with Mr Small Weller.

i told EVERYONE about that! it really tickled me

You may well be referring to Blobby Williams, there. His song "Let Me See The Menu" needs to be heard to believed.

There used to be a shit Meat Loaf tribute in Sydney that changed all the songs to be about food. Fat Out Of Hell or I Would Do Anything For Lunch, etc. They were stupidly popular as well, used to pack out such salubrious venues as the Revesby Roundhouse or the Rooty Hill RSL.

Small Weller is ace though.

This isn't really a shit band name ... more of an "Eh? You what?" band name I discovered last night.

A Japanese garage rock band called Thee Michelle Gun Elephant

Pretty good I think, though I suspect if they weren't Japanese it would just seem stupid.

Ah, the band described in Metro today as, and I quote, "the musical saviours who will usher in Britpop's second coming".

Seconded. I especially like "gangs of “lads” staggering from one bar to the next on a Friday night, arms around each others shoulders, bawling a chorus from one of the 3 bands they actually like" from the Brother edition/episode/whatever you young folk call an instance of a blog. It sounds like a typical Sean Club from what I recall of such events.

It also reminded me that I was once in a terrible single-word-named Britpop type band in the early nineties. We were called Connery and I wanted to die every time we played our turgid ploddery in public.

I remember Connery. They were quite awful! Did they carry on after you left?

When the people are being beaten with a stick, they are not much happier if it is called 'the People's Stick.'

In the words of the bard of Tranmere, "quick, the drawbridge".

They used to be a (bloody awful) punk pop band from my hometown of Ballymena, Northern Ireland called Acupunkture. They actually spelt it like that.

potentially worse than bands who come up with unwieldy/ill-conceived/stupid band names are bands who can't even be arsed to come up with new names and just help themselves to already existing band names from yore- for example, weekend, and now prisoners (no definitive 'the' with that last one and that's hardly surprising, fancy calling yourselves after 'the prisoners'... what next? smiths? clash? beatles?)
