The best song ever at the moment is in fact Sally Shapiro's He Keeps Me Alive.

This week's contender is Fleeting Like Etain by My Kappa Roots.

MKR is a quiet, unassuming guy fae Fife called Pablo who plays these beguiling, hush-folk songs, has a beautiful way of playing guitar and an incredible way with words. From Fleeting Like Etain -

and she says we are not born of the stars above
we are but fleeting moments in the sun
and there is no higher glory
just a quiet, human end

That's magic stuff if you ask me. And because of the aforementioned quiet and unassumedness of him, I'm not sure he knows how great he actually is, but maybe that's a good thing, he can be our little secret.

Razorcuts' 'I Heard You the First Time'. Especially the last thirty seconds or so, when it just soars off and makes you feel all joyous.

Also, it doesn't matter how shit you are at singing, you can always sing along to Razorcuts songs.

Yeah!

'The Last Picture Show' always makes things brighter too. Popguitarsolo!

I've tried to become sick of it; I've determined this is impossible.

How do people who go to Eux Autres gigs not die after looking at Heather for half an hour? I feel funny just watching that video.

Right now my favourite song of all time is 'Young Adult Friction' by the Pains of Being Pure at Heart. It explodes and reconstructs itself over and over again for four minutes. Perfect.

She does things to my nether regions I thought no woman could achieve. I think I might very well die if I see them live.

I'm winding my way through all my 5-star ratings in my iTunes, so I currently think pretty much every song I happen to have in my ears at the moment is the best song ever. For instance, Carly's "Your So Vain" just finished and now "Roadrunner" is organ squealing and guitar buzzing and Massachusetts homaging through my brain--how could anything be better? (Until the next song.)

i'll still stick with "golden age of aviation" by the lucksmiths, thank you very much (there must be about 5 postsd on anorak where i say this, by now...), though i find it impossible to listen just once to any of the following:
(my girl's got) miraculous technique - b&s
roman holiday OR the last song - camera obscura
anne boleyn - eux autres
my oblivion - tindersticks
x-mas song - fireflies
it's love - the softies
jade - razorcuts

i.e. whichever one happens to be playing at the time is my favourite ever...
1 wasn't for the money
2 wasn't for the show
3 is GO! GO! GO!

it's 'milk is politics' by the deirdres, I'm not being cute or nothing, it is genuinely and absolutely the best song ever

the way gemma sings it (it is gemma that sings it, isn't it? yes, it is) and the words and the whole entire way it's performed defines and redefines PERFECTION! POP! FUN! NECESSITY! BRILLIANT! and SKILL!

the deirdres own each and everyone one of those words now... there's nothing tongue in cheek in what I'm saying, I'd carve it into my arm if it mean't something to anyone

'milk is politics' makes me feel that there's a world of possibilities that are poised and ready and inviting, it's giddy and life-affirming and dripping with POIGNANCY too

it sounds utterly peerless and brilliant

it is THE GREATEST BEST SONG EVER!

as usual, andy, you have a way of describing a song which makes me want to hear it NOW!
your posts about songs/albums often serve to remind me how crap most music journalism is, and how great it could be.

but there've been so many posts on just this thread that have made look for new songs - thanks all: it's a pleasure to read so much lovely for such lovely music!

Johan, you'll love it! from the stuttering start to the sudden urgency and bells and everything colliding in and out and back again and the perfect poised vocals at the very heart of the song with all the background ahh's accompanying... and then the trumpet kicks in and there's shouting and Fairy's drums clatter funkily like he's Clyde Stubblefield with itching powder down the back of his vest and it all stops briefly... 'love is my favourite verb and it is a balloon, don't tie me down or I'll go...' and then we're off again at a dissolute pace all giddy belly butterflies and lightheadedness and weak knees and there's some forthright chanting and it ends

it ends!

but you can play it over again and the whole thing soars skyward like a rocket and you're on it

it's just simply the best song ever

'Milk is Politics!'

'Last night I dreamt......that somebody loved me......'

Overlooked in my opinion.

I sometimes don't know what I'd do without the Smiths. Songs that saved your life, indeed.
