I'm at work and can't even see 'the sock and shoe', but reading what you've all written, are you talking about Tigercats?

I hate reading threads like this during the daytime, as work filters block YouTube and I'm always convinced in such circumstances where you're all commenting on the rotten-ness of something I can only see as a blank space that it's going to turn out to be something I like. (Admittedly the mention of a banjo player does lessen this likelihood)

Who doesn't like that? I love Graceland, all of it. I don't care. I even like some Vampire Weekend.

You see it's like loving Graceland

Graceland is just about ok on it's own. In context of the 80s it's a shitfest that I detest. There I said it.

And yes Tigercats probably do like Graceland. But I like them. A bundle of contradictions. Music wouldn't be fun if everyone agreed about everything. Plenty of bands I love probably like/love music I don't. That's NORMAL.

I would love to read this.

I love Graceland, the songwriting is great, and the music is beautiful. BUT I heard Vampire Weekend, for the first time (knowingly) today (I had 6music on while I had lunch) and I got very upset. I can't deal with that TalkingHeadsy, TOO MUCH FUCKING HI-HAT, jollyjolly fun sound thing. And it seems to be pretty cool, right? Yeesh.

I'm getting to the point of ignoring radio, telly and people, that I really have very little clue what could be considered cool, popular or whatever, short of The Beatles and dancing. But that's as hip as it gets, right? ;)

They're like a kid's band. Is that why you know them? Were they on Cbeebies?

It does say something about this gender balance debate too. If there'd been a girl one in there she might have told them how stupid this song is. Four guys on their own will probably think just about anything's acceptable.

I got a press release with that video embedded. I immediately asked to be removed from the mailing list. Well, after I'd calmed down I did.

I had an email from the Fratellis mailing list a couple of days ago that had me diving for the unsubscription small print link. There must be an unsolicited list going round.

guys, siblings are well getting bigged up all over the new media platforms so I think your pathetic attempts at saying they're shit on your shit forum is shit, right, because loads of like really influential people who actually know stuff and can get stuff done and don't just spend all there time on shit forums going 'oh shit, that is so shit, and it is shit, right, because right I'm probably a vergin and I'm probably really old as well', I'm talking quality media people with really big outreach like evan davis from dragon's den and kylie pentelow from east midlands today and phil 'tinman' walker (I don't know who that is, but he's probably really twitter famous) so that's really viable and a really strong base for siblings to take off from

so, you're all badly mugging yourselves and should probably get jobs/lives/shaves, etc

and siblings are from ashbourne, derbyshire which is like totally mad, reprazent reprazent! ashbourne pussy in full effect!

a fog of ideas wrote:I'm not saying 'graceland' is bad or wrong but it seems to have been co-opted as a fun record, one to mess with the purist/punks heads... ooh, I'm listening to 'graceland', that's how pop I am, bitch

it removes the record from it's context, 'hey, african rhythms, so danceable'... well then, why not go find some actual african music or is that too much fucking effort? are you worried you'll turn into andy kershaw?

so, instead we have these turkeys with their first vampire weekend album pinned to their foreheads making this music that's all 'up' and everything's fun and light and there's no sense of the world out there, the world we live in

everything is just fine

I lived through the fucking eighties and the received wisdom, the shorthand now is that it was fun and bubble-headed and dayglo and snoody but the reality was you had bands that were intense and that were political and they were selling more singles than fucking mumford and sons or that cunt, I forget his name, looks like some kind of victorian gentlemen's penis washer, plays an acoustic guitar which is apparently 'brave' now? what the fuck! ed something... but back then you'd have these goofy bands... let me name just one- the fun boy three- they would be booed off the x-factor now... they made some great slightly demented pop songs and you felt they were 'on your side' even in those vests they wore, even though terry hall looked ridiculous and now what have we got? young bands compromised and neutered, all clean and polite and smiling and entirely unthreatening

and somehow I equate all this with people being passive aggressive and playing 'graceland' at parties because they know it will make me sigh inwardly

I have a whole thesis on this somewhere

I've got the numbers

back then, yeh sure, we had music tastemakers that may have been hugely suspect and appalling individuals but what have we got now? michael gove approved little shitbags making emotive face shapes while they fail to make a guitar sound anything other than hugely supportive of this government and the big boot print stamped on our collective faces

'oh, look at me, I'm jolly'

well, fuck you, you're sending us to the gas chambers (metaphorically, possibly actually) with your shitty ditties

rawr!
Possibly the best thing I've ever read on anorak! Andy, is there such a thing as 'victorian gentlemen's penis washer'?! :-)

He he he, Murray, I couldn't stop laughing when I saw this. Even Michael Palin couldn't have put it better :-)
