Shit Records

Post by shit_records » Tue Feb 14, 2012 23:02

...no seriously. It's called Shit Records.

:) I've just compiled a compilation of music made by some people I know who don't get any promotion and I thought people on this forum amy enjoy their music. Hopefully this will be the first of many releases for Shit Records and I can find more exposure for this fantastic music. Hopefully I will be getting this released on CD-Rs soon and there is a companion zine packaged with the download that I would like to get printed too. Anyway, without further ado, here she is:

Cocking hell lads. We're meant to be ATTRACTING girls.

Not making them hate us.

Your aesthetic is a disaster. I'm quite enjoying The Busy Men track, but come on, man.

HA HA sorry for the rather garish looks. Trying to get peoples attention has led me down some dubious paths I think. I am not trying to ATTRACT GIRLS with this btw, that is a picture of Sunita from Coronation Street pretending to be Katy Perry which I find to be quite an amusing photo and a surprisingly good conversation starter. Any thoughts on the music? THanks for the Busymen compliment, it's my brothers project so I'll pass on the niceties.

No shit.

Note: "attracting girls" could mean something other than trying to pull.
Like, y'know, not alienating other humans who aren't into the macho dipshit thing. The music industry is disgustingly male-driven and sexualised - not people making artistic use of their inherent sexuality (totally rockin') but bodies used for marketing, attracting the lads, women as a commodity. Turing our backs on that kind of sexist bullshit is a huge part of DIY art and music, and punk rock in general, to me and I'm sure many people on here.

I know you're not a big evil exec responsible for any of that shit, but your poorly thought through aesthetic harks back to stuff I'd hoped wouldn't have a place here. Not trying to have a go or nuffink.

see above. maybe give all that a rethink and then people'll be happier listening to the tracks? it's massively alienating.

as it stands you're using a nudey woman as advertising, and she's not even consented to it.

... or maybe we take a step back as rational thinking adults and see it for what it is. A tongue in cheek image using publicly released photos of a well known soap actress in a pretty non-sexual arrangement. If this really makes you disapprove because you think I am exploiting this woman's sexual identity in order to appeal to a luddites craving for cheap tittilation then I take your criticism on board and respectfully agree to disagree.

However; if you have stumbled across this and you have found that the music and imagery does not appeal to you personally and that it does not fit what you may see as the 'tone' of this website please keep your reactionary and misguided attacks to yourself. I love this community because of it's liberal friendly atmosphere and the downright lovely people I have met at the front row of sweaty geek packed gigs. I have no interest in pettiness or snobbery.

Talk to the left, my right hand is busy.

Jake, how is it 'non-sexual'?

Oh, I see, you were using irony to subvert the mainstream. Pretty smart! I was confused because I have never thought about art before.

Making a comp of your friends' music that you feel deserves to be heard is super cool! I've put out similar things, as have a load of people on here too, I'm sure. But your weird, juvenile branding just makes the whole thing seem pretty ugly. I haven't listened to it, so I don't know how good the music is. But its your project and you can do what you want with it. Just don't resort to calling an argument against you "reactionary and misguided", when you could take a moment to think about it, or have an interesting debate about sexuality, feminism and branding. There's totally a place for it! Hell, I love Stereo Total!!!

Your smug "tongue in cheek" attitude and childish replies might end up putting people off what could be great.

ok, let me mansplain... what follows is an old dude ramble... I don't claim to understand the young people or what I've seen referred to as 'post-internet' culture and I don't set out to defend shit records or condemn them but here's my tuppenny hay'penny observations in no particular order or making much sense, most likely:

firstly, and most importantly, 'attracting more girls' might produce a more enthusiastic response if your opening salvo didn't depict a picture of a soap actress with her chest out on a flier... I'm guessing

also maybe the term 'girls'... I'm also guessing

however in and of itself it's possible to co-opt images of commodified sexuality and flip the meaning/the intent so that one is commenting on it, making some kind of statement, perhaps you're saying look at the crassness of this or look how ridiculous this is, look at how this reveals that behind the male gaze is a festering heap of fear and neuroses... that could work

perhaps, also, it really is empowering to get one's chest out, it's never worked for me, my chest hair resembles a furry bra and has proved to be mostly upsetting to casual observers

is the image sexual? in and of itself it's not doing anything for me but I understand it's supposed to because of the pose and so on- however I'm not getting jake's assertion that it's amusing- it is what it is- I even tried lightening up for a minute and I'm still unamused- then I feel alienated, why don't I find it amusing?

and another thing, why is it actresses in primetime tv shows seem compelled (by society? by their agents? by their own sense of self?) to get semi-naked for lad's mags and so on... it's a curious phenomenon, an odd transaction, and one that's merely accepted by one section of society as 'sexy, harmless, fun' and by another as 'sexist, stupid, demeaning'... does the image address either side of that? does it square the circle? no, to me, it remains 'it is what it is'

should I be amused because it's a middle aged woman having the temerity to pretend to be katy perry, a much younger woman? is that it?

also, we have no prior knowledge of jake's sexuality and perhaps we've made some assumptions about his motives and intent (does that matter though?)

shock value can be used to subvert and provoke, jake refers to the picture as being a conversation starter, so I'm intrigued by the 'agree to disagree' line and the pettiness and snobbery put downs, it either is a conversation starter or it isn't

ultimately it looks to me like a happy hardcore flier put together by some fifteen year old boys... that's neither to damn it or condone it... it is what it is

the problem for me is it's been there for over a year, I've still not checked out shit records... now jake could've used a still from a sixties kitchen sink drama or a picture of a kitten with 'shit records - an introduction' typed on it and who knows? however, he didn't...

I remain unclear what the point of that image is... beyond 'it is what it is' and perhaps that's all it is

I fear jake may be selling himself short- maybe that's shit records schtick?
