The Wonderful & Frightening World of Mark E Smith & The Fall

Post by roobee » Tue Oct 09, 2007 09:29

So, Radio 6 just played The Fall's 'Hit the North'.

And I realised I couldn't think of one album, one song, by this band that I didn't love.

That said, I don't have absolutely everything they've released, so there may well be something out there that doesn't float my boat. Although I doubt it.

So yeah, The Fall. Mark E. Smith. Bloody brilliant. So there. x

I haven't bought the last two albums, I don't think.

But I love, love, love The Fall. There was a time when I seemed to buy a new Fall album every week with my wages. I used to love that they had such a massive back catalogue, and that there was so much to find.

I think Hex Enduction Hour is my favourite. Followed by Bend Sinister and This Nation's Saving Grace. And Extricate.

I think Bend Sinister would have to take top spot with me, just for Mr Pharmacist.

Grotesque is probably my second favourite. Maybe. Today, anyway. Although Hex Enduction Hour is up there.

And Fall Heads Roll is permanently on in the car at the moment.

aaah. The Fall. Yep. Good stuff. One of those bands that have so many LPs it's impossible to know the lot. But what I have I like. 'Extricate' is probably my favourite LP.

Hee hee!

The Fall are just wonderful and unavoidable--and prolific! There are so damned many albums, aren't there? I tend to listen to a couple of the collections. I love to work out the Fall, esp. "Totally Wired". I love "Leave the Capital" when I'm feeling, you know "in yer face".

I've never seen Smith & Co. live; what's that like?

Either completely brilliant or totally dreadful. More usually the former, though.

I reckoned it was hit or miss. That's why I never quite mustered the gumption to go. I settled for TWP always being good for at least one cover per gig! Sometimes I prefer my Mark E filtered through David G.

Mr Smith and whoever comprises Co. at the moment are playing a show here soon. I've been charged with the responsibility of making a compilation for someone Ian and I have bullied into coming along.

I've got a three-disc compilation and a bunch of mp3s. What songs would you put on a Fall primer?

(I've already decided it'll start with Totally Wired. But of course.)

Oh, that's way too hard to say!

It's impossible.

But I'll have a go tomorrow.

That other thread's got a wanky title.

Andyroo! You must include 'How I Wrote Elastic Man' and 'Mr Pharmacist'. I reckon they are compulsory inclusions. Um, 'Eat Y'Self Fitter' too.

It's too hard. Don't make me choose.

I second that. Going home to listen to them now. It's been too long.

I've always been fairly happy with this puppy and I'm certainly a perpetual novice. The only song of theirs I LOVE that it's missing is Deadbeat Descendant.

Yon track list:

1. Intro
2. Fiery Jack
3. Muzorewi's Daughter
4. Choc-Stock
5. Cary Grant's Wedding
6. Middle Mass
7. Slates, Slags, Etc
8. Leave the Capitol
9. Container Drivers
10. Impression of J. Temperance
11. W.M.C. -Blob 59
12. City Hobgoblins
13. Totally Wired
14. How I Wrote Elastic Man
15. Hip Priest
16. The N.W.R.A.
17. Smile
18. Medical Acceptance Gate
19. A Day in the Life

That's a great comp. Apart from the last track. I hate that version.

I'd like to recommend Jawbone and the Air Rifle, New Face in Hell, Repetition, Psykick Dancehall, Lie Dream of Casino Soul, Iceland, The Classical, Gut of the Quantifier, Theme from Sparta FC, Free Range, Chicago, Now!, US 80s-90s, LA, Cab it Up, Bill is Dead, Birmingham School of Business School, It's The New Thing, Elves, Oh Brother!, Kicker Conspiracy...

I've missed loads.

By the way, there's an ace record shop in Melbourne called Gaslight Records, and they used to put out this great calendar where they had days named after a song, and there was a prize for someone who matched the song title.

One day they had Hip Priest Day. And my dad is a priest, so he went in with my sister, and they gave him a Ned's Atomic Dustbin record. True story.
