Po!

Post by MJHibbett » Thu Jan 21, 2016 11:16

There doesn't seem to be a thread on here about Po!, can that be right?

Anyway, I thought people here might be interested* to know that Ruth from Po! is going to be playing at my Totally Acoustic gig in London in April. Details are here: http://www.mjhibbett.co.uk/totallyacoustic/thegigs.php

*I say interested, if you're anything like me that translates as "amazed and excited"!

Previous Po! related chatter was on this here thread (whether they should be merged or anyone much cares I don't know).

Great to hear that Ruth is playing again. I really enjoyed following her blog over the last couple of years, where she had previously threatened to come out of retirement, but it seemed to have petered out over the last few months and I was wondering if it was all to come to naught.

This would explain why it was so hard to track her down during her wilderness years (as discussed on the other thread):
Ruth Po! wrote:For at least ten years, I made no reference to the music I had been involved with. I didn't play the CDs, I never pulled out a guitar to drunkenly strum out 'Sunday Never Comes Around', I kept myself to myself and forgot about the life in music.

But something has changed in the last couple of years. I think it started when somebody told me that there was a lot of stuff on the Internet about my band PO! So, of course, you google yourself and it all starts, doesn't it? There are Wikipedia articles and strange YouTube videos put together by fans, and people saying back in 2005 that I have disappeared. No. Not disappeared, just tried a bit of ordinary life. It was all right.

That is, it was all right for a bit.

I guess it must be like experiencing some exciting gay encounters in your youth, but deciding to go straight in order to have a family and please your family because you think it will go away and that you can control it. And I've seen people do that for a good few years. Half a lifetime, even.

But you can't forget about it for ever. The Person inside starts knocking loudly and calling "Hello?" and you start to have ideas and urges. I began to watch live performances again, with a mixture of thrill and dread. But now I'm paralysed, not knowing what to do. Is it all just stupid nostalgia and vanity, or do I need to go back to music? Should I try to write and perform songs looking like some middle-aged mumsy? Songs about tennis elbow and parents evenings? I don't think so. I could write the same songs about the same subjects as I always did, because not much has really been achieved on the 'wielding of power and the situations that result from it' front, has it?

Good to know it all worked out in the end. And if those who are going could nudge Ruth into putting her records out again (or at least up on the internet), that'd be good as well. I almost got a copy of "Little Stones" last year on eBay, but after I'd won the auction, the bloke started being weird and trying to take the sale off site so I cancelled it. Hard to believe that crooks are trying to lure unwary fans of obscure indiepop records to their doom but what else could I surmise? Haven't seen one for less than £20 since (apart from one where the sleeve had been nibbled away by mice). I REMAIN BITTER.

God, that's so true. I mean not just about creativity but anything about one's personality that's 'irregular' or not quite two-point-four-children.

I think I need to go off and play through the entire Po! back catalogue.

I'm really moved by Ruth coming back to play. What a gift. Po! have always been my secret band, sitting just outside of everything else, whispering things to me that I didn't know I needed to hear.

I think I really like Po! but I never bought any of their records - they were around when I didn't have much money. I saw them a couple of times and have a few songs on compilations which I loved. Some rereleases would be great.

I don't really like a lot of indiepop from that era (probably more out of laziness than anything else), but Po! really stand out to me. I love that Ruth's lyrics are often very focused on quite out-of-step subjects (coercion, abuse and the like), but it doesn't feel really heavy and "issue" based - Po! records are really human, there's even a wryness to them that you wouldn't expect from seeing what they're about on paper ('...oh, there's another one about child beating...').

I also like the feel of being outside normality in a lot of the songs ('Treasure', 'Fay', 'Your Brother', etc) - that line in "Ever Been Had", that 'proper people never have to cry' is really affecting, the idea that if we aren't a success or happy or standard in everything then you're made to feel as if you don't belong.

And on top of that, they still did a great song about a horse being really lovely.

Does anyone have an mp3 of 'Little Stones'? I suspect we'll all wither and die before it gets re-released and like to hear it sometime before then.

I don't think so - I've just been nagging Ruth about doing TA for about 2 years!

I used to listen the Bedroom Tapes a lot after I found them on a now-defunct blog. My favorite song was "The Mad Girl." I never heard the records though! I think I have some Ruth's Refrigerator stuff that I was into. I'll have to revisit.
