Favourite 2012 Albums

Post by dustymoth » Tue Dec 11, 2012 10:41

Sorry if there is already a thread on this, I couldn't see it.

Well my top indiepop(ish) albums this year have been

The Lovely Eggs - Wildlife
Shrag - Canines
The Just Joans - Buckfast Bottles In The Rain
Liechtenstein - Fast Forward
Allo Darlin - Europe
Shonen Knife - Pop Tune
Ace Bushy Striptease - Outside It's Cold Just Like The Inside Of Your Body And
Death By Chocolate - Bric-a-Brac
Evans the Death - Evans the Death
Internet Forever - Internet Forever

What have I missed? What are yours?

Tigercats - Isle of Dogs
Jens Lekman - I Know What Love Isn't

Those are my two favourites this year, but I really love the Ace Bushy, Evans the Death and Internet Forever albums too. I still need to get the This Many Boyfriends and Lovely Eggs albums, both of which I keep mysteriously forgetting about when I'm near a credit card.

My favourite not-indiepop albums of 2012, since I assume we're sticking to one thread:
Mount Eerie - Clear Moon (and Ocean Roar is great, too)
The Wave Pictures - Long Black Cars (their best since Instant Coffee Baby, I reckon)
Jason Lytle - Department of Disappearance
Beach House - Bloom

Smittens
Garlands
Jens Lekman
Allo Darlin'
Just Joans
Dylan Mondegreen
Chris Cohen
Burning Hearts

I found out a new album from Billie The Vision And The Dancer is out, still didn' listen to it, but I wouldn' t be surprised if it ends included in my list. Also, I listened to The Violence by Darren Hayman a couple of times on bandcamp and the sound is great but I'm still not into it as I'd like. I'm waiting for my vinyl to arrive to listen to it more carefully.

I'd be daft not to mention these:

Ace Bushy Striptease
The Rosie Taylor Project
One Happy Island
Pale Man Made
Proto Idiot

:-) Love them all.

Others I love that have nothing to do with my record label:

Tigercats
Dignan Porch
Shrag
Big Joan
Puffy Areoles
The Middle Ones
The Chasms
Rayon Beach
The Just Joans

There's a fair few I've not listened to enough/properly/at all yet, too.

It's been more of an EP/Singles year for me as well.
not really here

* : I realize these are not all indie pop albums, but I just can't think like that as far as music is concerned ... I either like it or I don't, no matter what genre
** : after writing this list I suddenly realize it has been quite a good year for albums whereas beforehand I thought it wasn't ;-)
*** : there is no strict order to this list cause all these records have their different qualities for me, but if the amount of plays are an indication of how much I actually like these records, the Garlands album wins hands down !
**** : I might get shot for liking the Hot Chip album and 3/4 of the Pet Shop Boys album, but hey I do and who is to tell me that I shouldn't ;-)

I'm excited as a mate tells me that I have a Sugargliders comp winging its way over to me as a Xmas present. I only know one Rich in Soton (who happens to be a big Tender Trap fan) so assuming it is you - what are the odds? - then happy xmas and!!! happy birthday before then. I hope to make it down to Soton in 2013 now that I don't need to worry about attending any football (the Toon have experienced their customary thrashing). Cheers, M

I actually found there were relatively few albums this year that did it for me -- my favorites have been mentioned by others (Allo Darlin's Europe takes the cake for me).

From my perspective, this year was more a year of promise of things to come. This is a little off-message, but:

Favorite Discovery of 2012: Colour Me Wednesday

The first song I heard from them is easily my favorite song of the year: "Holiday From Your Life." They called it a demo but I can't imagine it getting better upon re-recording. "Lost on the High Street" is a bit of a different sound and I like the change in pace -- love their Lemonheads cover, too! Does anyone know about their album plans?...

My Best Bet for 2013: Stars of Aviation

We've now heard something like four songs from the forthcoming album and they're all fantastic. If they released those songs today accompanied by 7 renditions of "Mary Had a Little Lamb," it would still make my top albums of the year.

My Most Anticipated Return for 2013: Saturday Looks Good to Me

I'm especially partial to the music Fred Thomas writes for both his own vocals and the vocals of other contributors. The first single off the forthcoming album sounds like it's going in that direction. Can't wait!

Also Eagerly Anticipated: Veronica Falls

I had their self-titled album on heavy repeat and I'm looking forward to their new album, Waiting For Something To Happen. Their most recent 7" and their latest single promise good things. I've always thought that I'd be a bigger devotee of VF if they pushed toward a more open, comfortable, personal sound; sometimes they seem a bit distantly hip.

Also Eagerly Anticipated: Fear of Men

Don't know much about them, but so far so good. I think they're putting out an album in 2013.
