Saw Calvin last night. He was utterly superb again. what a total fucking hero.

are Sitting Alone At The Movies or When You Are Mine on records yet? he played both of them, and they're astonishing.

i finally picked up a copy of the Sons Of The Soil record too... seems pretty good on first listen

i love the way he pushes the awkwardness. i love the way his voice fills the room so naturally without any amplification. i love the way he changed the name of the venue every time he said it. i love the endless, rambling anecdotes inbetween songs. i love the fact he's barely learned to play his guitar in 28 years. i love the way his songs are so clever and poetic and serious, yet charming and funny and scrappy all at the same time. i love the way he dances to his own voice so awkwardly yet unreservedly

fuck, i fucking love calvin fucking johnson

oh ffs, you're totally right! whoops!

i've listened to that record so many times, but i always end up putting When Hearts Turn Blue on over and over and over again... i think that's an utterly lovely song

oh well, that'll learn me to pay closer attention

I can only agree with what indiansummer said. Well, I enjoyed his performance slightly less than two years ago, but that was mainly because this time I knew what to expect, whereas two years ago it was completely new to me.

I found this on Youtube, which is a very different, but kinda the same, rendition of Sitting Alone at the Movies: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jXn8BU1bD44

I'm playing a free outdoor thing with him in Cardiff on Saturday. I'm hoping he asks me to duet with him on Acceptable In The 80s.

thanks! it'll be my first time seeing him! i haven't heard much of his solo stuff but i'm just excited about being in the same room as him and maybe hoping he does some beat happening stuff. i've seen loads of stuff on youtube and there's something about the way he performs, i don't know what it is, but it's the kind of thing you'd totally go all dizzy over (in a good way)

aw yeah totally.. i put him on two years ago when he was over and it was amazing! hes definitely incredibly awe inspiring even just to be around. yr going to love it :D

and if hes still selling mix tapes i would really recommend getting one - my friends got a couple amongst them and didnt stop raving about them for ages!

the real reason i got my fringe cut was so i'd actually be able to see at the gig. also because i was getting mistaken for a hobo.

and yes, i'll see you there! feel free to pour a whole pint of water over my face if i do go a bit lightheaded.

totally getting a mixtape! even though i don't have a tape player anymore. i'm just gonna get my old yellow sony sports walkman off my parents next time i'm home. the only action it ever got was the smiths and depeche mode and maybe a bit of suede. time for something new!

I never really "got" Beat Happening. I understand their appeal, but as hard as I try, I can't get into too much of their material. I do, however, think that Indian Summer is magnificent, and a few others as well. Maybe I'm not trying hard enough...

Beat Happening does seem to be a band where opinion is often polarised. I have known many people who just don't like them, but equally many who love them.

I think that my favourite songs of theirs are Cast A Shadow, The Other Side, Red Head Walking, Dreamy, Bewitched (to name just a few!). But can easily put on Black Candy without skipping tracks. Jamboree is good too, as is Dreamy.

Black Candy is on Spotify, I think..

if you think you're not trying hard enough, you're probably trying too hard

i wouldn't worry yourself

Beat Happening's raggedy brilliance (for me) is in the great songs, either despite or because of the shonkiness, the wonkiness, at times the skronkiness

i can never decide whether they're great songs behind the gleefully amateurish delivery, or whether they're characterised and humanised and electrified by it

but i don't think it matters

what matters is that it makes some part of me (and maybe you) go 'PHWOARRRR' and 'YEERRRRSSSE' and occasionally 'sniff'. it's pop music played by people in love with and empowered by pop music and punk and rock n roll and GODDAMMIT i love it

i'm off to listen to jamboree now

i don't think it was instant with me either, and i still don't LOVE everything by them, but there is so much stuff i totally adore and can keep listening to on repeat without the excitement fading. i guess it's maybe an emotional thing? i dunno. there's a playfulness to a lot of the songs too, which i really like.

anyway, i saw calvin on tuesday and it was even better then i thought it was going to be (going in with super high expectations) i dunno how he manages to seem totally vulnerable but totally not vulnerable at the same time and also really charming and lovely and well...you don't want to look away for a second in case you miss something. i love how he's so animated and talks a lot inbetween songs without it being boring. and man, he's just really fucking funny too. it was for sure one of those gigs where you walk away on a total high. which is kind of amazing (for me) considering i didn't know many of the songs.
