Ah, yes - hello! Somehow I was already aware of that real-life / screen-name connection, although I'm not sure how I knew...

Speaking of uncertainty, I didn't know "Charlie Clarke" was a cover, but it's one of two songs I always skip through on that otherwise excellent album, so no matter. Conversely, I was sure that "Jesse Lee Kincaid" must be a cover (dunno why - it just sounds like one somehow), and was pleasantly surprised to discover it's a Feck original.

yeah this is bugging me a bit now.

I think the best explanation is that they were going to cover 'Comin' Soon', which is definitely a different track, but then dropped it from the record along with a few of the other covers (WCEPAB, Mathew Sawyer, the Hermits) and Clash mag just got it wrong.

so that's probably not what happened at all.

[edit/update: so if you want the story just ask the singer. that IS what happened: the Cope and WCEPAB tracks were pushed off the LP but came out on a bonus 7", and Clash was wrong about 'charlie clarke']

This weeks NME (i know, i know.. i just flicked through it in smiths.) has a feature on another 100 great lost albums, one of which is Realistes.

Of course, self confessed CG fan boy Ryan Jarman picked it, but it was still a little surreal to read about it in there. It's a nice write up, Ryan was mentioning how he thought the timing was right due to the KRS/Kathleen Hanna connection for them to be massive and how he first listened to it every day on the way to college on his walkman.

They do perhaps concentrate too much on the supposed 'revolving door' policy of the line up though, which really isnt that bad is it?

Theres a mention of London Popfest too..
and that snare drum, that drum roll

That's it, I'm going to make a bonfire out of my cardigans, pin-badges, and zines.

I want a Comet Gain t-shirt but I can't find anything via Google or eBay and they don't appear to even have a website. The only link on their Facebook page is to their Myspace which was last updated three years ago.

Clearly not the 4 letter f-word that I'm thinking of...boooo......serves me right for being a pottymouth.

i've only ever seen one comet gain t-shirt design. for a band whose artwork is always good and often great, i thought it disappointing (image too small, and just not that exciting in the first place), so didn't buy one. probably would have done had the band ever had them onsale at a gig i attended -- unlikely, since even bringing records seems beyond them! -- but paying for international shipping from kill rock stars for a t-shirt i wasn't crazy about seemed silly.

predictably, once the shirt was no longer onsale, i wanted it after all. eventually an unworn one in my size went on ebay at less than the original cost, i was the only bidder, won it, hooray! except ... i waited and waited, there was no reply from the seller to several messages, and even opening a paypal dispute resulted in silence. i got my money back, but i'd rather have the shirt. think it's the only time i've left negative feedback for someone.

i wish they'd tour a bit... they only seem to play in london when i can't make it

the indietracks 2008 version of Comet Gain is still the closest i've gotten to seeing them, which isn't much closer than 'not at all'

sigh

I spoke to John Slade about that and he was adamant that the lineup contained "three good members." I can;t actually remember who was there other than him (and members os SHRAG, Liechtenstein, and um, others).

I've only seen them at Indietracks, London things, and Primavera. I did hassle them a little bit about a Brum gig, but, yeah, I guess that ship has sailed.

I think a regular punter who may have been Swedish sang at least one song. Mind you, the set was only four long, wasn't it?

Didnt Steph Shrag play as well? I think it was Jon on lead vocals/guitar. Steph on keyboards/vocals, Niemi Lichetenstein on bass and Leigh Anne on drums. I recall them getting the punter (F-Ted?) up to sing You Can Hide Your Love Forever They also played Love Without Lies which i guess was their single around then, Steph was singing the words off a piece of paper. Some meandering version of Mainlining Mystery (which Jon sings on anyway) and yeah, something else.. i'm sure there were 4 songs.

I've seen worse Comet Gain gigs (probably)
and that snare drum, that drum roll
means we've got a winner

The guy who sand 'You Can Hide..' was the chap out of Dorotea. Steph, Leigh Anne, and Helen Shrag also featured, as did Naemi from Liechtenstein.
